Where do you see gaming/modding going in 20 years?

I anticipate lots of game spam - pixel graphics, side scrollers, maybe some cell shading, turn based text games, and so on.

I anticipate 3d rendering first/third person games to get bogged down by mishandled copyright regulations and bogus contracts.

And, I think modding will mostly be people making minor tweaks and/or breaking overly complicated interfaces and then calling them amazing.

I hope I am wrong.

in regards to other games I can't say so myself...wishing there would be more mods in Witcher 3, or Nier Automata or any AAA game released so far with the same amount as in Bethetic's last 2 games...

in regards to said Bethetic™ and their games the modding community there after 20 years...if they continue on their current practice with CC...

it's looking bleak...The Matrix kind of bleak...

Highly depending on the game, but still similar to what we have today, fairly limited. dll injectors and add ons will be still there, or something like it. Most online-only games will be validated more often to prevent cheating, and many games/consoles are online most of the time, I wouldn't be surprised if someone decided to try again what microsoft tried to do with xbone.

As of "porn" games, they are getting popular, some censored version of games are available on steam already (with free uncen patches provided by the dev).

I am still disappointed with many physics engines, many of them are still jittery. Will probably be much better in 20 years. Maybe it boob/butt physics will be there by default (heavily tuned down to be "realistic".

As of next TES game, I have mixed opinion about online, TES online wasn't a classic TES game, and there comes the mods, just if they enabled something like skse and mcm by default, I can see mods soaring. Then comes the mods compatible with each other.

As of texture replacement mods, I can see them staying as mod devs using similar engines, when you know to replace in one engine, all games in the same engine will similar. Now, we need a mesh replacement as well, flat nipples are just insulting.

And all the whole 4k thing, it still nowhere 100%, and most are upscaled anyway, I think next gen will be also the same, full true 4k at 60fps, I think 2 gens from now, so maybe around 8 years, so in 20 years, if 8k a thing, it would just been feasible.

Also the competition in GPUs is slow at the moment, so it might be a little bit later.

Anyways, there will be always some good games to play, so I am looking forward to it.

History shows us time and again that stripping content to a bare minimum leads to a public wanting more for their investment. The record industry gave us vinyl,..and then the CD......Ultimately the miniscule download...Software houses are now following this trend.....We have to rely on a satelite administrator

to play a dvd we own......Modding enters this comical scenario with the promise of longevity of your purchase ,along with potentially unlimited variation.I truly believe that somewhere a game engine awaits  the day that every possible variation can be applied and the software houses will suffer the same fallout the record  industry is now experiencing

What I see coming in the following years are games with big progress In artificial intelligence. NPC will probably play as a real human being and this will probably change drastically the MMO worlds.

This is the revolution that i see coming.

Concerning VR I do not expect big success. The only parameter who can change this statement is how the technology used to build Virtual World may evolves. when the real 3D (without glasses etc...) will be there, here we will see a big bang in the gaming world. this will take time by the way.

Concerning Modding, indeed this will be adapted and evolving in the direction of the new AI that I was talking about.

How come that we've produced an AI worth the name some fifteen years ago for Gas Powered Games that is still miles ahead of what we see in today games - NPCs with no brains and thus the combat skills of a late 20th century mudcrab, hmm? Brave new AI world. Yup. The reason for the total stagnation in AI development is fairly simple - the average gamer, usually a juvenile, simply doesn't want to lose against AI in combat, a superior intelligence. Combat must be easy, I called it 'predictable', almost a cake walk. That, however, is the opposite of intelligent, or human for that matter. End of story, end of AI development. Although we had roughly a million free DLs the usual feedback was best described as "WTF?!". Since then I've never ever seen anyone carry on the torch of the unpredictable... by good marketing reasons.

It took many years for the PC or the internet or the mobile phones to become mainstream. VR is now at a first gen consumer level - it is for early adopters. With all the good and bad sides of this. But it is too early to judge if it will be successful in a long term.

VR already offers lots of possibilities for the creative people and offers a new way of creating mods - meshes and textures. You can model something in Google Blocks (or other similar programs), then import it into Tiltbrush to paint on it if you want to, then export as obj and import into Skyrim/Fallout. Or import the character body in Tiltbrush, paint an outfit or an armor and import it to the game.

I believe the trend to make (aspects of) the modding easier for everybody will continue. No matter how much I don't like the settlement system in FO4 I do believe we will see more of it in all future BGS games.

Gaming? Hell, what will anything be like in 20 yrs? Though to look at the last 20, things don't seem to have changed very much. I say that free modding will spawn some of the greatest creative thinkers of our time. At least a few will have their hands in the development of new games. I mean it is one thing to build a game from scratch, but somewhat more work is involved in figuring out how to make changes within the confines of the games structure and engine - I think. Skyrim is arguably the BEST game ever- not because of Beth- but because of the sheer talent of individual fans to constantly look for ways to push it further and further. Honestly I don't think Beth knew what to expect when they opened their games to modding, but I am well sure that they have been shocked by the amount of content that has been poured into their games over the years. Even if they manage to kill modding for their games, the modding community will continue to create and explore other things well into the future. For a gamer such as myself, it is an especially exciting time to be alive! Finally a hobby that has an sometimes  overwhelming amount of possibilities! :D Woot Woot!!

As we can now see,...stagnation,...reiteration,....and monetisation are the bywords for the majority of BIG releases now.The gamer is now simply a cash cow to be regularly milked until the tits are bleeding.....How many variations of a release are required before all and sundry become sick of this patent exploitation..No one is gaining from this greed except the software companies and the shareholders.....You and I are merely the rubble of the empire of cash generation...And as indicated before the add on has become an industry "norm".This is not the future of gaming,.but here and now....And it will be it"s downfall

modding will become extinct as all companies will adopt Beth's ( lets charge more money ) paid mods model

Games who knows VR with loot boxes and hats, probably a VR coin slot to insert more VR money
