Where do you see gaming/modding going in 20 years?

VR is crap it won't last just a fad like before because nobody is gonna sit around with those "internet creep" glasses strapped on their head all the time. The average gamer can barely afford a console and most people are buying things on credit cards they will never pay off just paying a fee to spend the banks money. When those cards dry up things will really slow down because I haven't met a person yet that actually wants to carry cash around because they are afraid they will spend it.

I predict more government regulations restricting porn in all it's various forms, including games, from

countries having a problem with men and women who don't want to fuck each other and pop out

more worker and soldier drones. Creeping nanny-statism will also kill much fun, as well as special

interest groups with a distinctly anti-paternal mindset. There's only one cure - REVOLUTION!!!

I may regret posting this, but ...

"I predict more government regulations restricting porn in all its various forms, including games, from countries implementing Sharia law, from a special interest group with a distinctly paternal mindset" - at least in Europe in the next 20 to 30 years.

I predict more right-wing fear-mongering people will vote for idiotic state leaders that will fuck things up more and will in the end work for their own interests and corporations. Harsher actions on everything including porn and anything not "normal", from gay people to furries. At least in Europe.

With that out of the way. I assume that'll it will be mostly underground and that there will be a lot of restrictions on internet.

We live in interesting times in which the future of man is as uncertain as his death is certain. I fear the future of gaming is the least of our existential problems today, our leading aggressive 0.1%ers are not. If we don't remove them and their abysmal stupidity from the acting equation in the short run, they'll remove the whole species in the medium run from any equation.

1. Merging of processing hardware into either cloud systems or single networked processing hubs a.k.a the death or PC, Console, Mobile, as meaningful terms of distinction

2. Industry realignment with the break up or shrinking of current major Triple AAA publishers and a surge from the indies, basically the same thing as the end of the Golden age of Hollywood right down to many of the new blood indies taking the industry juggernaut's place flaming out spectacularly after words. Shame too I have a decent amount of fondness for the Triple AAA experience, but the current method in which their done is largely untenable hence the financial difficulties of many of the publishers.

In 20 years I can see VR at least clinging on to a market share but I feel that until we can somehow ditch the glasses it won't leave the novelty niche.

PC gaming will come to the point that software writers will finally begin to make some use of multi-core processors and as for video I wouldn't be surprised if on the extreme end for awhile we see fully external video boxes literally a otherwise full function computer that is just for processing video, in simpler terms a very oversized video card.

As for modding I think that once scripting becomes more streamlined we will see far more in depth mods especially quest/story related, animation will not likely change much beyond the tools becoming easier to use for lesser trained users. I also think that content that is less mainstream will finally gain some form of tolerance.

Adult content in games will come about to be increasingly common as the 1st/2nd gamer generations age and younger generations of course seek out said content as well legally or otherwise, the only thing that could begin to stop this sort of thing is increasing censorship from either the last flames of the "moral" conservatives who can't see their own folly in censoring things or from left wing liberals/socialists attempting to further control media and simply grabbing on to gaming because its seen as a form of media and thus a means of control.

What we need more than ever is a unified outcry from the public demanding unrated and uncensored media in all of its forms.

Considering how many still moderately young Americans still find graphic disembowelment less offensive than a penis on screen I don't know I share you're hope unless development and purchasing move away from the United States.

I predict more useful left-wing fools will vote for idiotic state leaders bankrolled by Islamic fundamentalists and global financiers that will fuck things up more and will in the end work for their own interests and corporations. Fixed it.

I think feminists and SJWs and with help from right-wing groups like the NRA, video games would be completely outlawed and owning a video game will give you an automatic death sentence.

I'll assume this is a joke.

I see it being where it is now with higher mean FPS. Higher mean and mode texture resolutions and file sizes. I also see modding getting ironically less stable and more stable as time goes on. Really just depends on the stability of AAA games in the future. Perhaps now is the day of Minecraft, such that games are never actually polished by devs, nor is the game engine ever optimized. Might be a bit nihilistic but, the "early access" business model may become the new AAA in two decades times.

Over all. I see modding growing in popularity, if not proportion of game players. Same shit different decade. Maybe the publishers will try to monetize mods. Maybe, they'll make better API's, maybe games will be made with modding years from release in mind? I doubt it, but it'd be a nice surprise.

EDIT:

If I'm gonna make a wish that won't come true. I hope some mad scientist, creates a modular, performance efficient rig [skeleton] that can detect and avoid cell collision. Basically this would be your player in Skyrim, they equip a dwemmer shield. And because of the skeleton they have, their arm doesn't clip the shield. Their feet never collide with the ground. The holy grail of 3d rendering in other words. WILL NOT HAPPEN.

But if the artists at Bethesda were able to edit their assets such that during game-play. When you swing a sword, it won't clip the rock nearby. Or when you jump, your arm doesn't clip the armor due to the design of the assets... Again, this won't happen due to the scope and size of TES 5. And even in smaller games, it would take way to much time. Games are made for profit, not for the art of it.

Related video to give context to what I'd love to see. It's about shadow of the colossus. Tied as my favorite game ever. I want a PC HD port. I would sell my first child for it.

Dude who made the video did a few videos on this game. But it really illustrates the difference between an artist, a craftsman, versus a game publisher. I'm not making a value judgment. But maybe, one day. We can have the artistry of Shadow, in the size and scope of TES.

I really wish this game would get a port. I would buy multiple copies.

Amazing graphics, horrible writing, and you'll have to buy the game bit by bit, after an hour of play you'll have to buy a DLC to continue.

Aaaand this is kinda already happening, little by little.

My idea *same as above* and some gamers will play games, and some will quit gaming, like me.

Procedurally generated worlds by deep learning machines will make vast open rpgs possible on ridiculous scales. Hand sculpted world design will fall by the way side except in cases where the developers are trying to make a specific point or produce a certain mood for the story arch. AI will continue to improve dramatically. 2 man gaming companies will be able to do the work of hundreds and large game companies will have huge amounts of capital to spend developing story lines and interesting mechanics.

If one wants to get an idea where modding will be in the next 20 years, we first have to look at the time frame itself and perceive it in a different way. Technology increases exponentially, so what we are REALLY saying is how will 40 years worth of technology change in 20 years? Look at where are now in 2017 and look back at 1977. That is how much technology will change in the next 20 years. Back in 77, console gaming was just starting to become a thing, let alone trying to mod it. If you told someone back in 77 how to create a nif and add DDS files to it and then bring it into a program that will allow us to script it so it does things, save it and put it into your game as a "mod", they will look you like you were crazy or exceptionally smart. But we do it with relative ease. Partly because we don't do the back end stuff. We don't sit there and write the binary code that actually makes it all happen. Programmers of today are actually privileged in the fact that they can use programming languages that converts the easy to read and understand syntax into binary so that the processor actually knows what to do. Framework upon framework upon framework. Basically what I'm getting at is that in 20 years, machines will code themselves. We could literally just tell the machine what we it to do, and it write the necessary code to perform the task. It may even do it on the fly. Just imagine how quickly we could turn out new technologies.

What is going to make all this a reality is quantum computing and neural networks, which will allow for advanced machine learning and A.I.. We definitely wont be using the standard computers we use today because it's been predicted that by 2040, we wont have the available power to run all these systems. That is why there is a huge push for something more energy efficient and quantum computers offer that, as well as computational speeds that are 100 million times faster than the computers we use today. Just to put that into perceptive, what would take a quantum computer one second to compute would take a conventional computer 10,000 years to compute. So one can just imagine the types of applications that it will allow us to use. There is even a computer that runs on light instead of electricity which is almost as fast and just as energy efficient. We wont have quantum computers in our homes, but we will be connected to one that does all the heavy lifting. We will interface with it by means of conventional computers. That idea has been brought up in some tech circles.

Now when we think about all that, we also have a major push for S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related fields. These are the jobs of tomorrow and there is no getting around it. They are already starting to push this in the education system and it's only going become the standard curriculum in a matter of time. So now when we think about the technology on the forefront and the brains coming out of the school system that can use it, and advance it we are only left with a very new way of life.

Now granted things do get in the way like politics, economy and social unrest, but those are only drawbacks that lessen the flow. We have had bad times before and it's never stopped advancement.

So, my take about where modding will be in the next 20 years is that what we are doing now with modding will look primitive and the things we learn about it will be obsolete. It will be just talk about the "good ol days" much like how geeks in the 80s reflect back on making games in assembly. It will be a thing of the past and we will move on. Modding will still be around, but for VR and AR, which will be a mainstay, and quite possibly the next forefront on the horizon in those times will be full brain immersion in alternate reality. Something like the matrix, because I have not even gotten into Biotech yet and where we are with full brain mapping. If you think about it, the best RPGs we play are the ones in our heads.
