CTD when loading and when new game

I just installed some mods for my xx playthrough of skyrim, but when I was done making my character and was ready to start (by sleeping in the bed (alternate start)) the game crashed. Every time I try to load the game it also crashes. I have tried multiple "crash fix guides" but none of them did anything that would prevent the crashing. I have also sorted my load order with LOOT. 

Can someone please help me.

Have you run FNIS and what did it show?

 

Since, technically, this happens after the game starts, the next question has been what start(s) have you chosen since the location may give clues to your problem.

Uninstall them all, since it sounds like there was more than a few added.

Start New Game. Does it work?

If yes, save.

Add a Mod or a couple of mods. Load, test. If working, Save.
Repeat until either all mods are added or until you find out which is crashing your game.

 

If no, then the issue wasn't any of the new mods you added.

Mixing weather mods is bad unless you have a patch. If you're lucky you just see some weather oddities, because the last weather mod in LO wins, in a bad case you get CTD (I found ELFX weathers doesn't goes well with other weather mods unless there is a patch).

MME is picky if it comes to LO, it's better to have it (very) low in LO to prevent conflicts.

If you use mods like Sexlab, Campfire and Simple Knock make sure those don't overwrite PapyrusUtil 3.3. They include older PapyrusUtil versions, if you are not sure just install PapyrusUtil 3.3 again and overwrite all.

An up to date PapyrusUtil is important for DD related mods.

Run Beth.ini to get the skyrim.ini and skyrimpref.ini settings right

 

Also:

Check if you have at least a SKSE.ini, if not create one.

You shouldn't stop using ENB if the issue was presumably Flora Overhaul (which I'm not sure as I've never used that mod). ENB does not only limit your FPS, but manages your VRAM way better than the game engine.

 

If you don't want to go back to using ENB + an ENB preset you can use ENBoost, which is some ENB files (no preset) and it will allow you to setup stuff like memory management and FPS caps without adding any post process effects.

Am I missing something here? I can't see any mention of ENBs or SFO. :classic_smile: Has a post been deleted or summat?

Seems like a reply was deleted. Right above my reply OP was saying CTDs stop after removing ENB and uninstalling Flora Overhaul. OP was concerned about not using ENB because that's what he was using to cap the FPS.

 

Or I'm crazy and imagined the whole thing

I installed ENBoost and it works. Not sure though why Skyrim flora overhaul caused the problem

It can use a lot of VRAM depending on how much flora is about. It's not a problem with the mod as such, just the textures eating VRAM issue as far as I know. Maybe DKDCDA has more info?

VRAM exhaustion is very unlikely to crash your game. VRAM, unlike RAM is not managed by the OS, in fact, even if you were to run it on an embedded system, you wouldn't be able to manage it. VRAM is entirely managed by the graphics card firmware and the firmware will not "free" VRAM as you are used with RAM, instead it will just overwrite blocks of memory that are no longer being used without allocating specific blocks to programs (this is why verifying VRAM size and usage is so unreliable).

It's possible that a major VRAM exhaustion could cause a crash in a situation where the GPU is currently using enough VRAM that the new streamed data cannot be stored, but that's quite rare and DX/OGL/Vulkan APIs will return an error which any mediocre renderer will not ignore, performing a graceful shutdown, rather than letting it crash through an unhandled exception or deadlocking by awaiting forever for the API function to succeed.

 

There is however another memory exhaustion problem that ENB greatly helps with; RAM exhaustion on 32-bits address space.

By enabling ReduceSystemMemoryUsage, ENB will will launch new process(es) to store certain types of datas, such as textures, and use IPC (inter-process communication) to transfer and retrieve data to/from these processes.

It's important to note however that IPC has a lot of overhead, from process context switch alone that's a big factor. Run the game and see whether the combined private memories of TESV.exe and enbhost.exe is smaller than ~3.5 GB under all the circumstances you can think of (big cities, big battles, etc); if so, I recommend you to disable ReduceSystemMemoryUsage and see how it works (data accessing/writing should be much faster).
