The Ancient Profession is part prostitution mod, part lore-friendly quest mod. It's my attempt to make prostitution as legitimate an in-game choice as joining the College of Winterhold or the Thieves Guild, and it's my attempt to make role-playing a character who truly starts from nothing a little more possible (still a work in progress). The mod adds the following:

 

  • Quests. This is a SexLab mod, so the quests will almost always include some kind of sexual element. The early quest content centers around you obtaining licenses to work as a prostitute in each of the nine holds of Skyrim, and they are designed so that low-level characters can complete them. The quests will branch out from there. I intend to design the quests around role-playing, not combat, because I want to be able to play a character who simply isn't a combat bad-ass right at the start of the game. I also intend to keep the quests as lore-friendly as possible while still expanding beyond what's officially part of the lore.
  • Prostitution. There are existing prostitution mods, of course. This one is just designed to fit in with the quest mechanics of the rest of the mod, and I want the interactions with clients to be a little more to my personal taste. My intent is to also implement at least one brothel that you can join, with its own quest line and benefits, as well as other choices that may have their own trade-offs.

 

I hope that players enjoy getting to know the characters in the mod and find the quest lines interesting to play.

 

At this time, and for the foreseeable future, this mod is intended for female player characters only.

 

Up-front warning: Although rape is not the focus of this mod, your path through some quests can lead to the player character being raped. This mod will also contain some references to creature-related content, though all scenes of that nature will be optional.

 

 

This mod is currently an EARLY ALPHA release. All version upgrades are likely to require clean saves for now.

 

I often add features and make updates to existing quests, and right now I'm not worried about making sure you can upgrade an existing save seamlessly. Until the quests get more finalized it is VERY LIKELY that quests won't work if you try to upgrade in an existing game. If you want to keep up with new versions, keep a clean save from before you install the mod, or be prepared to start a new game.

 

I am looking for people willing to test and provide feedback.

 

Note about LE compatibility:

 

Because of the amount of time it takes to develop the mod, I don't plan to support Skyrim LE at this time, simply because I don't have time to test the mod in both versions. The mod does appear to mostly work if you extract the BSA and put the loose files in your Skyrim directory, then delete the BSA. But note that I AM NOT SUPPORTING THIS RIGHT NOW.

 

How to start the quests

 

Option 1: Go to the Dibella's Garden brothel between Dragon Bridge and Solitude, and speak to Eliana Duerra

 

Option 2: Go to any innkeeper and ask, "Do you have any work that doesn't involve risking my life?". Then ask "May I...sell myself in your inn?". If you are in Skyrim, this will start a quest.  While you can start working as a prostitute outside of Skyrim, such as in Raven Rock, it will not start a quest there.

 

Option 3: Speak to a prostitute.

 

Option 4: Speak to Benjen Black-Briar in Riften.

 

Planned features

 

  • Different employers, with different advantages and disadvantages (partly implemented)
  • Ways to build skills through safe training - that is, not putting your life on the line - in a way that's not just clicking a message box and paying some gold. (partly implemented)
  • More quests and a more complex prostitution system (the prostitution system is now partly implemented)

 

Bugs and known issues

 

There are a lot of them. This is my first attempt at Skyrim modding. Some of them I already know about, and some of them I don't. A few things you should know right away:

 

  • There are about 16 playable quests right now. Sometimes, somebody might tell you that they will get in touch with you later, but that is not implemented yet.
  • The Whiterun and Falkreath quests are placeholders.
  • The prostitution system is in early parts of its implementation. Every man you solicit will accept, and they will always say the same thing. I will add some variety and chances for acceptance or not later.
  • The Windhelm quest has multiple paths through it, depending on your allegiance in the civil war. It will do something different if you are unaffiliated vs. an Imperial vs. a Stormcloak. It even handles you changing allegiance partway through.  While I tested the hell out of this quest, it's complex. I'm sure I missed something.
  • When training with Fasta, she may stand there with her firsts in the air or a spell on her hand without casting it. She is supposed to cast a spell at you, but sometimes won't. The quest should detect when this happens and use another way of applying the effect to you.
  • Vanikseth gets stuck multiple times on the way to his workroom. This is an issue with the vanilla navmesh between where he starts and where he's going. I will address it at some point, but he should automatically "jump" past the parts where he's stuck.
  • If you work as a prostitute in an inn added by a mod, you may get a bounty just for walking out the door of the inn if you didn't pay the innkeeper his due first. This is caused by the mod not giving the inn a parent location with the keyword LocTypeHabitation on it, and the mod author would have to fix it. This happens with Skygerfall, for example.
  • After the special Dibella's Garden party job, if you do the job again, the cell may not reset properly unless you leave the brothel first.

 

There are more. These are just the ones I think are likely to confuse people.

 

Installation

 

Just extract the archive into your Skyrim SE Data folder or use a mod manager to install it.

 

Hard Requirements (install them or it won't work)

 

  • SexLab SE and any of its dependencies
    • Some of the quests do require creature animations. I intend to always keep creature-related content optional. If you start going down a quest path that won't work without creature animations enabled, the mod will tell you.
  • PapyrusUtil
    • This is installed with SexLab, and it's fine to use that version, but this mod directly uses it now.
  • Fuz Ro D'oh for Skyrim SE (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/15109)
    • Dialogue will go by too fast without it
  • Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch 
    • The mod will load without this at the moment, but I think some of the quest conditions rely on bug fixes from the patch.

 

Soft Requirements (install them if you want to)

 

The mod will load the following to provide the prostitutes more outfit variety than the dull vanilla tavern clothes:

 

 

As of 0.4, you can add or remove these outfit mods at any time, and the mod will use them.

 

Compatibility

 

I have not tested this mod extensively for compatibility, but I do usually play with plenty of mods. I have seen no conflicts in the ones I use, and in general I try not to modify vanilla assets more than absolutely necessary. That said, there are certain planned features that will introduce the possibility for compatibility issue. The biggest of these is brothel locations, as this will require me to edit the Tamriel worldspace. I may also be forced to modify a few vanilla scripts to integrate the mod better.

 

Definitely compatible

 

  • Sisterhood of Dibella. This mod doesn't interfere with the Sisterhood of Dibella mod, and I've tried to make sure that certain quest lines that interact with the temple still make sense if you have that mod installed.
  • SexLab Jail Rape. I tested this explicitly with the one part of the mod that might conflict, and there is no issue.

 

Not recommended 

 

  • Any other prostitution mod. Other prostitution mods will be unaware of the licensing and employment systems in The Ancient Profession and will provide a way to sidestep its game mechanics. If they implement player approaches, you may also get weird interactions. And if they provide solicitation dialogue, you may have to remember which mod does which thing.

 

Not compatible

 

  • If there's a mod out there that changes the rental bed at the Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood to a different bed, this mod won't be compatible with it. There are technical reasons for this that you probably don't care about.
  • Radiant Prostitution if you have the "NPC Scene" options turned on. Some of the characters in The Ancient Profession wear the tavern clothes outfit, and this can cause quest-breaking interruptions.

Issues found after release for 0.2 that will definitely be fixed in 0.3:

 

  • If another mod adds soldiers to the Whiterun Stormcloak camp by placing them somewhere else and moving them to the camp, you can't offer them sex during the Windhelm license quest.
  • Duration on Vanikseth's spells is way too long (about 20 game days) and adds a hissing/static sound for its entire duration.
    • Workaround: Use the console command player.dispel xx0b22a7 but replace xx with the first two numbers/letters you see in front of items added by this mod if you use the console command help tap 4
  • If the amount you owe to Dibella's Garden is entirely from cash advances when you pay what you owe the brothel, it will not reduce the amount it thinks you've borrowed, and you won't be able to borrow any more money even after paying it all back.
    • Workaround: If you haven't paid back borrowed money yet, entertain at least one client before you do. If you have already paid some back, you will need to increase your debt to be greater than the total amount you have borrowed before paying any of it back. Alternately, you can use the console command set TAPCashAdvanceDG to 0 to restore your ability to borrow money

 

Issues found after release for 0.2 that I don't know whether they'll be fixed in 0.3:

 

  • Quests that rely on sex scene completion for advancement don't check to make sure the scenes start successfully
  • Brothel customers can approach the player during Dibella's Garden skill demo

Sounds really interesting. Is there hope for LE version, or is it goin to be SE exclusive?

I appologise if the question is rhetoric, i have very limited understanding of just how much work it is to convert between the two.

Short version: Not from me, but I'm 100% OK with it if someone wants to do an LE conversion, if it's possible, as long as it's just a conversion.

 

Longer version: I don't honestly know how much work it is, either. I will say that early on in my work on the mod I was bouncing between them, and I didn't see any problems, but I think modders have since discovered one or two things that are important to do when converting. I'm just not familiar with what those are.

 

I don't believe I'm using any SE-specific scripting features, and as far as the ones I'm aware of, I don't intend to. The mod as-is does not work with LE - I just tried it out, and the scripts don't run. It's possible that the mod might work if you just unpack the BSA, but I didn't try that, and that leads to the reason why I probably will not personally develop an LE version. The mod already takes a lot of time to develop and test, so I just don't see myself devoting time to repeating all of the testing on LE, too. If someone wants to unpack it and figure out how to get it working on LE, I have no problem with them putting up a conversion, as long as there aren't any features added or removed to make them get out of sync.

 

But if there are bugs that exist on LE that don't exist on SE, I probably won't spend any time to debug them. If the theoretical conversion creator wants to do so, I'd definitely consider incorporating fixes (as long as they work on the SE version), but I won't be developing them.

This looks very promising, i really hope you are planning continuing working on this, specially since this passed a bit unnoticed, not many are playing quest mods in SE it seems.

That's great, being playing with it and i'm loving it so far, the amount of content is bigger than many 0.5 mods, and it has less bugs as well, haven't found any significant one yet.

 

Quests are superb , it's like playing real vanilla quests but with more options, they really encourage exploration and roleplaying as a prostitute. My favorire is Morthal.

Hi, thanks for your quick response. I now continue this quest. However, after I engage sex as one of the girls during the party. The quest seems stuck there. No additional dialogue from other girls and the guests, and one of the girls, Kella, disappear. I load the previous save and try again, still got the same result.

That's strange. Sorry you're having trouble. If you don't mind, could you answer a few things for me?

 

1. Is Kella leaving before the sex starts or just afterwards?

2. Did you choose to be with the Redguard ambassador specifically?

3. If yes to 2, does the problem happen if you pick a different ambassador?

4. If no to 2, are any of the other girls leaving before the sex starts?

5. If you go to the console and type getstage tapqsolitudelicense BEFORE the sex starts, what does it say?

6. What does getstage tapqsolitudelicense say AFTER the problem starts happening?

7. If you talk to Falk Firebeard after everyone disappears, is there dialogue for telling him that you entertained the ambassadors?

 

The quest is supposed to advance when each of the individual sex scenes has completed, so my best guess as to why the quest is getting stuck right now is that one of the scenes isn't happening correctly.

 

Answering the above questions would help me to debug the problem in case it happens for anyone else. If you just want to get past it, I suspect you could use the following console commands:

setobjectivecompleted tapqsolitudelicense 40 1
setobjectivedisplayed tapqsolitudelicense 50 1
setstage tapqsolitudelicense 50

That will do it. That's annoying. I thought I'd fixed her before releasing 0.1. Damned AI packages. Pretty sure she's already fixed for real in the upcoming 0.2, but I'll make sure to test that again.

 

So you basically have two options here:

 

1. Hurry and start the sex before she manages to get out of the Blue Palace.

 

2. Select her in the console and use moveto player before you start the sex scene.

 

You could also try selecting her and using evp to see if it will make her realize she's supposed to stay put, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

 

If she isn't in the palace, then SexLab won't start the scene, and if it doesn't start the scene, the mod won't get the event saying that her scene completed., and if it doesn't get that, the quest won't advance.

 

If the Argonian ambassador teleported to Kella (which he might if you picked the Redguard ambassador), that could explain everyone suddenly disappearing. I assume you also got notifications about clean-up stuff happening.

Version 0.2 is out. You MUST use a clean save or start a new game. Upgrading from 0.1 is not possible.

Holy moly, this mod looks and sounds fantastic. I love the concept, especially if you are keeping immersion and consistency with the Skyrim setting at the core of your approach. I'm currently running Radiant Prostitution, but I'm going to keep an eye on this, and super excited to try it out once I've finished my current playthrough.

As much as I like sex mods, if I'm trying to actually play through the game, it always bothers me when they start feeling like they're grafted onto the game instead of part of it. I don't know if I'll always completely succeed at maintaining absolute immersion and consistency with the setting, but that is always my goal. Hope you enjoy the mod when you get around to trying it :)

Make a checklist of what you want to achieve with the mod. Take the idea from others, but remember it is your own brain child. Opinions will come which will clash with your goals, but you need to carry on to get all the lines in your checklist ticked first. After that try to implement what others want. I am following this thread. Good luck in your endeavor.

I'm having a possible compatibility issue with the Entertain the Stormcloak Soldiers lead-in as an unaffiliated character trying to get licensed in Windhelm.  Specifically, only one soldier in the camp has the proper dialogue option, leaving it stuck at 1 of 3.

 

Can I get the name of the quest to try and check it with console commands?

Sure, it's a combo of TAPQWindhelmLicense and TAPQWindhelmLicenseSub1.

 

Also, maybe too much information, but the conditions on the solicitation dialogue are in the spoiler section:

You've fucked 3 guys and want to keep fucking AND

This guy isn't a wounded soldier AND

This guy is in the CWSonsFactionNPC faction (editor ID 1c9fd)

 

Do you by chance have a mod that adds more soldiers or something? Something that jumps out at me in these conditions that could break in the right conditions is that if a mod adds more soldiers but doesn't put them directly in the camp (it moves them to the camp from somewhere else), the soldier's "editor location" won't be the camp, and he won't have the dialogue. I should probably check if the soldier's "current" location is the camp instead.
