@Tempfiks I would look search for "preset" on Nexus and look at all of the high poly presets people have built. If you see one with brows closer to what you like, look and see what the requirements of that preset are and that might point you towards something you'll like better. That's what I would do anyway.

 

@unnameable That sounds like a serious underlying issue. Maybe just reinstall, but before that I would enable one section of mods at a time. Start with just the ones under "Foundation". See if it works, then move on to the next section, "SKSE Extensions". Repeat until you get back to having the same problem. Then you'll know which sections has the mod that's causing the issue and you can troubleshoot one-by-one from there. That's assuming you can get it to boot at all though, which it sounds like you may not be able to with a crash like that. Also, very nice avatar.

@wollboi Thanks, but searching presets is something of a black hole of dependencies and they generally don't seem to translate well across builds.  I was just asking if someone had something they knew worked well here. I'll probably just go with plan B first and then browse the brows of hi poly....

@wollboi @Tempfiks Yea, I'll just reinstall since the base game won't run.

I may or may not have messed up some settings in the ini file. ENB settings are what I did differently this time around.

I was using Beth.ini, but there are some settings that are easier to edit from the MO2 ini editor. Perhaps using both messed something up?

@unnameable Possibly. I've never really had much of a use for Bethini. I'd run Skyrim right out of the box with no changes, ENB included. Then maybe replace with Aylis's ini file, see if that works, then add your ENB, then add Aylis's ini file. Then start with the Foundation section, see if it runs, repeat as necessary. While it's annoying searching for problem mods, it's going to be a much easier fix if that's all it is. Like you said earlier, you can leave Live Another Life for convenience sake.

Beth.ini was causing quite a few problems here. So i stopped using it.

 

If it is only the ini then you could try to delete those. Skyrim will create new ones and even if they miss all the bells and whistles it should at least enable you to run the game.

The icons for the 'Ghillie Suit' are way more complicated than expected as the tool i used completely ignored the naming rules and the weapons. Looks like i'll have to use a general term for the suit and the location will be added below that.

'Ghillie Suit' works, but what is with 'USAF ... '?

 

'Uniform' doesn't seem right, 'Equipment' or 'Coverall/Overall' too...

 

Do they have a special term for this kind of suit? Or would it simply be 'USAF Ghillie Suit'? As non-american i don't even know if they have a special name for it (what came up in my search wasn't really helpful). Camoflage? C-Suit? Cam-Suit?

 

So far the term 'USAF Camoflage' seems to be the best choice... But i'd prefer to know and use the correct term.

Found the problem! ?
SSE display tweaks and SSE engine fixes require you to run in windowed mode. I thought I already did that, but it worked once I changed it without using Beth.ini.

@unnameable When you say modded game, are you using the full list or what?

 

I stopped using Display Tweaks once it updated to improve performance but somehow told my NVIDIA drivers that my monitor supported a resolution that technically doesn't exist. Hosed not only Skyrim, but a lot of other games too. Games were automatically defaulting to the ****ed up resolution no matter what settings I'd put it on in-game, through Nvidia Control Panel, or through Geforce Experience. Ended up having to use a tool to trick it into removing that resolution, and was immediately back to normal resolution and great famerate in all my games. Out the window it went.

Anyone rocking a multiple follower frame work, which one and where we slapping it in our load order?  I kind of want to try out Inigo and Lucien and keep Auri too.

@ascendentkunglao I use Immersive AFT and it works fine. It's in the Override section, underneath the mods from the list (under We Don't Float for me). Other people like Nether's Follower Framework, and it also runs fine in the list. I don't think Inigo works with AFT, but probably does with Nether's. Dunno about Lucien. Auri does work with it.

Here is the thing about multiple followers. If you stick to this guide any follower framework will do.

 

It only gets ugly if you want some of the other kink too. And then it's really ugly really fast. Take for example one of the gazillion combat defeat options. You can get anything from followers not being recognized and just stand around or turn hostile to just awesome script lag or worst case scenario your follower being bricked by stripping it from its AI package.

 

If you just want to add devious devices (and the various trap mods) I suggest Nether's Follower Framework, because while it still has some stuff I consider too much (i.e. home bases) it does handle unique followers (hello inigo) least worst than all the other big options. Unless you want to run around with at least one follower that is immune to all the traps because it doesn't get handed over correctly.

 

NFF goes to the bottom of the loadorder too. After the bashed patch and before any dyndolod.

 

And while NFF technically alllows for up to ten followers don't ever exhaust that cap, even not for a quick 'I'll just gather up a couple followers and put them in *location*'. Followers eat a lot of vram (because authors want them to be pretty doh!) and too many followers isn't something you would put as the main reason for infinite loading screens or CTDs.

@wollboi Yes, "modded game" as opposed to just running the base game with Alternate Start. Could be full list or just incrementally adding stuff.

So, its fixed. I deleted beth.ini and the skyrim.ini files and regenerated them. Did the tweaks via MO2. I ran a couple of games and teleported to some problem areas like the mountain path from Darkwater Crossing to Ivarstead. Looking good so far!

I haven't finished the full installation, just a test before moving on to installing SL and running the LOD scripts. Fingers crossed!

@alaunus01 Just curious, but why did you put NFF so low in the load order? Mine was towards the bottom of the Override section and it seemed fine. Did something interfere with it?

I think I moved it below the bashed patch because the optional no team magic damage esl was not working any other way despite being an extra esl?

Though I could totally misremember that, added NFF in december 2020 and in pandemic time that is a couple millenia ago. Doesn't help that I moved that one around a lot before I realized each follower ate almost 2gig (v)ram.

Just to point out that experiences vary, @wollboi  I've had zero issues running NFF (largely in its default state w 1-4 followers) both at the end of Overrides and at the top of the Patches group.  I've also had no issues with SSE Display Tweaks from v4.11 to current v4.15-1. 

@alaunus01  I agree with most of what you say in post #6540 although I've never had to push NFF to the bottom of the LO.  Script conflicts can be hard to spot but in this build the only files NFF directly overwrites are four (exact copy) UILIB files from Defeat.  Really, almost all the problems I've recently seen with followers have come from the individual mods themselves.  Followers with the most potential are also complex and sometimes glitchy: Misty Skye, Kalena Rios, Rosa Roundbottom, some of the Sofia variants and many others.  Auri, as in this build, is an exceptional standout, and sets a very high standard despite her delightfully diminutive stature issues with LL.

What do you guys think about this mod Unofficial Skyrim Modder's Patch. This seems to be a bug fixes fix sort of mod. I try to wait for a few more weeks to see its process.

 

Also there is a voice mod for The Paarthurnax Dilemma mod. No more silent dialogue.

@Aylis can I just give you the biggest hug ever for this guide. I rebuilt my modded Skyrim SE from scratch using it. I didn't use every single one of your suggestions and added quite a few of my own favorites (I prefer the tropical look) but I've got a stable build that looks mostly gorgeous with Reshader, Rudy ENB, and 384 mods, including 285 listed plugins. I've had a couple of times when I needed to end SexLab animations but I'll put that down to a minor bug in the mod.

 

The only issue is obvious neck seams for male NPCs from mods. I think tempered skins and high poly heads may not be playing well together? The females using the Bijin skin are perfect. I'll look at the HPH patch mod you list in the previous post to see if it solves it. I fixed the blackface by using the Face Discoloration Fix mod which effectively does the facegen export through SKSE when it detects black face. But it feels like a band-aid solution to an underlying issue so I'd like something better.

 

My only wishlist item would be some skimpier clothing suited for tropical weather for the men, but that isn't a concern for this topic. The bikini armor works on the SOS body for most mercenary/bandit/adventurer men, and the forsworn are alright as well, but it'd be nice for the guards and the civilians to have something lighter. Oh well.

 

EDIT: I edited the weather settings myself in SSEEdit and saved them back into Obsidian Weather, which is the last mod that affects weather. I shouldn't see any snow and it's been pretty good so far.

 

EDIT 2: and Dark Arena CTDs trying to enter it, but then I never got it to work in other builds either.

Yeah, USMP only comes to my attention as a mod that says "I don't like Artmoor changes".

 

the The Paarthurnax Dilemma - Voiced Dialogue is created using VAsynth but I find the sound to be servicable, not too bad.

 

There's new bug fixes mod powerofthree's Tweaks. Despite the name, the mod's tweaks are disabled by default so you can toggle one that you like. I use it mostly for the fixes.

Depends on the mods.

 

Changes to NPC (at least the big ones) usually require a new start.

Adding new NPC is different and usually works.

Changes to cities only if you have been there before.

Textures are usually safe, same as weapons and armors.

@Angahran I like to test mod updates, which sometimes tends to necessitate starting a new character. I think for the most part though, people could easily stick with one current stable build and only update and switch the list around when they want to start a new character.

Apologies for butting in, but I'm guessing Aylis really meant to type "Changes to cities only if you have(n't) been there before."

 

Regarding restarts, heavy modding requires them and maybe that's half the fun for some.  It can be argued that after enough repetition, gameplay really doesn't start till maybe level 30 or so.  After playing Skyrim for almost 10 years no apologies needed for any shortcuts taken.  I have a personal list as, I'm sure, others here do.

 

I also agree with @wollboi that most all beginners should stick with a build (this one!) and drive through a full game with only a few updates as @Aylis describes above.
