Vault 3 was one of five vaults constructed by the Vault-Tec Corporation in the broader Mojave region assigned to house a civilian population, along with Vault 11, Vault 19, Vault 21, and Vault 34, as well as one of two vaults constructed in proximity to the Las Vegas Strip, along with Vault 21. Nestled amidst the blocks of South Vegas, Vault 3 was intended as one of the seventeen "control" vaults, so it was not given any parameters for the social experiments that notoriously plagued most other Vaults.[Non-game 1]

For decades after the Great War, all was going well in the Vault until a water leak occurred sometime in the 23rd century, forcing the residents to open the Vault for the first time to find help. After the original inhabitants of Vault 3 opened their doors, they began trading with other communities and establishing connections with the outside world. For a couple of weeks, it was peaceful and the inhabitants made a good living. However, the increased trade also brought the Vault to the attention of the drug-addicted raider tribe known as the Fiends.[1]

Exploiting the Vault dwellers' naivety and lack of security, the Fiends successfully conned themselves into the Vault, upon which they killed the inhabitants and claimed the Vault for themselves.[2][3]

Originally intended as a safe place to house his people and keep them from accidentally wandering near the settlement of Westside, partially to avoid disrupting the Great Khans' drug trafficking around there and partially to prevent more of their number being killed by the Westside Militia, especially their super mutant member Mean Sonofabitch,[4] Motor-Runner eventually capitalized on their fortune and turned the vault into an impenetrable base of operations.

With Vault 3 under their control, the Fiends have since grown steadily stronger, becoming a serious threat to the people living on the outskirts of the southwestern corner of New Vegas as well as a constant nuisance to the New California Republic Army command stationed at Camp McCarran.[5]

Layout

The location of Vault 3 can be acquired from Colonel Hsu at Camp McCarran after volunteering to clear it out for him, from Elder McNamara in the Hidden Valley bunker during Still in the Dark, from Diane at the Red Rock drug lab during Aba Daba Honeymoon, or from Private Ortega outside the east gate at the NCR sharecropper farms.

Situated within the main block of the South Vegas ruins, the Vault door, which is opened by the adjacent control panel, is connected directly to the South Vegas ruins rather than a cave system like other Vaults in the game and therefore provides no loading point for the Vault interior, thus the lack of a door opening sequence.

Inside the entrance is a Fiend guard, who will question the Courier on what they are doing there. Passing a 64 Speech skill check or wearing Great Khan armor allows the player character to navigate the Vault without being attacked. The armor can be removed after the initial dialogue with the guard. This particular guard levels with the player character, and will have a high HP at higher levels, with a maximum of 260 HP at level 30.

The walls of the Vault are covered with graffiti, presumably done by the occupying Fiends. Much of the graffiti in the Vault is the same as that which can be found on the Brotherhood's bunkers in Hidden Valley. In one of the toilets, there is graffiti on the wall of a stick man and woman. It's an enlarged version of the one in Hidden Valley. Overall, there are about five hackable terminals inside the Vault, which contain information about the Vault's history.

Vault 3 consists of three areas:

Recreation area
Vault 3 seems to have a much larger recreational area than the other Vaults. The recreation area also includes several pool tables and some minor loot. There is a locked door containing multiple Nuka-Cola bottles, one Nuka-Cola Quartz, and one Nuka-Cola Victory. Within the recreation area, there is a locked door leading to the maintenance wing.

Maintenance wing

The leader of the Fiends in the Vault, Motor-Runner, can be found in his throne room in the northern part of the maintenance wing along with his two guard dogs, Bone-Gnash and Ghash-Bone.

Living Quarters

On the main floor of the living quarters, there is a cage holding three captives, including Rick Lancer, Rachael and Dennis. The cage also holds the body of the fourth captive, Carter, who managed to escape to search the Vault for weapons before being caught and subsequently killed. Daniel, the Fiend who holds the key to the cage can be found in one of the southernmost rooms of the living quarters. Alternatively, the cage door can be picked without Karma loss, and no Fiends will become hostile regardless of detection. In addition, the captives will leave the cage and walk in the crouched "sneak" position past all of the Fiends in the Vault to the front entrance, and the Fiends seemingly pay them no mind.

Two of the rooms in the living quarters each have a deceased Fiend on a bed, surrounded by empty syringes, Jet and Psycho. Around the southern part of the living quarters is a bedroom containing a terminal with an administrator "Billy boy" and a function called "Compose Automated Blast Message." However, this does nothing, stating that the system is offline. Some of the Vault is flooded, and the flooded areas are long and difficult to swim through with enough time to return for air before taking drowning damage. In addition, the water is irradiated at 1 rad/sec. The rebreather or Turbo will aid in searching these areas.

Rebecca Hamm stated herself that she was born and raised inside Vault 03,  She gave its accurate location inside the Mojave Wastes in the City of Henderson, a City once located on the outskirts of what was once Las Vegas.  On record to her new employers, the Responders, she was 1 of 12 known survivors that managed to escape the massacre of Vault 03 via a concealed back entrance.  Although she could not give the precise location to that back entrance, she has available knowledge of  the faculties operations and the identity of its final Overseer, a woman named Maxine Caswell.

Where to Begin? 

It's been a rather long 200 hundred plus some years.  I spent much of it as a prisoner of the Zetans in cryogenic hibernation or locked inisde a fully functional statis pod.  trust me, the later is worse as you are fully aware of your situation.  I won't go into the details of my childhood right now.  That can come later.  I'll start on Reclimation Day.  The day Vault 76 opened its doors to a post-apocalyptic and shattered America.  Upon exiting Vault 76, I preceeded to the closet habitable section of West Virginia I could find.  It was the trading post called Flatwoods and it was operated by a group called the Responders.  Theier orginization consisted of survivors, (police offiers, judges, doctors, pilots, teachers, fire-fighters, EMTs, etc.) from the nuclear exchange of October 26th and then later the Scorchbeast Plagues.

Here are some more pictures I was able to locate in the ruins of Charleston, West Virginia.  God, this was so long ago and I can't believe Patricia, yes the Patricia Hecate made it all the way to 2288.  I guess those Zetans knew what they were doing with cryogenics, right?   I expect to see her post a message or two in the near future.   

It's a sight to see the Responders and their elite arm, the Fire Breathers rise to the challenge whenever it is needed.  Now, they have an established base of Operations in Concord.  They and a resurging Minutemen will cover security and safety within that area.  Now, my take on West Virginia.  We must secure a mercantile route from Northern Eastern West Virginia at the Red Rocket Mega-Stop and push south along the Toxic Valley and into Morgantown.  This will shore up business into Sutton, Flatwoods, Vault 76, the Charleston Enclaves, and into Foundation.  It won't be easy.  The inhabitants of Vault 94 have really screwed up that North East section of that state.  Fortifications and scouting expeditions are now a necessity with the constant production of mutations and other abominations in that region.  Super-Mutants are the least of our worries.

Gimpee disappeared one Spring Morning before I awoke to face the day's challenges.  He (? - Never checked under his hood) simply went missing one morning.  Kitty and I need his candle was burning low and if he was facing his final days, I hope it was done with the quickeness of an atomic wind yet little pain and suffering as possible.   I miss his biting courage and furocious claws.  Ms Kittie Sixtee-Nihne , welll, it was never going to happen and you died too soon at the hands of a Super-Mutant.  Next time I travel to West Virginia, when it comes time to retrieve my Responder Armor, I shall visit your grave with a bottle of wine and toast to your not forgotten memory.

The Responders: A New Faction in Fallout 76

Although Fallout 76 won’t feature any human NPCs, there may yet be factions in the game, albeit in a different form than previous instalments. After all, the game has more voice lines than any other Fallout title. Bethesda recently explained how the Brotherhood of Steel appears in the canon of Appalachia. Now, the studio has given fans a brief glimpse of another new entry in the list of Fallout 76 factions; the Responders.

Fallout 76 Factions? The Responders and Their Story

Although players won’t see any living members of the Responders in Fallout 76, they are likely to hear or read about them. Responder remains were seen during gameplay recorded at the recent Greenbrier press event, for instance. It’s likely that players will find notes or recordings left by Responder members. They may even have the chance to join the faction in some way, either through listening to broadcasts sent from outside Appalachia or perhaps by speaking with Responder robots.

According to Bethesda, the Responders are so-called because the faction is made up of members of America’s pre-war emergency services; “They were the first to run into danger,” explains the studio in a recent Tweet; “the brave fire fighters, police officers, and medical professionals who selflessly served their communities. After the bombs fell, they formed the Responders. Their mission – to help each other… no matter the cost.”

The Responders seem to have some similarities to the Minutemen of Fallout 4. However, while the Minutemen were a selfless militia protecting communities long after the bombs fell, the Responders’ goal is to help people very shortly after. Interestingly, the Tweet includes a screenshot of what appears to be a Responder protectron robot. Protrectons have long had an association with the emergency services in the Fallout universe; in Fallout 4, for example, players can use terminals to assign different personalities to dormant protectrons, including; “law enforcement, fire brigadier, medical responder,” and more. As such, it makes perfect sense for them to be a part of the Responder faction. While human members may be no more, it’s entirely possible that the robots will still be functional and could provide players with quests or even a way to join the faction.

Magnus Odinsohn, Addendum and Journal Update

Two months later, I had returned to Charleston, West Virginia to site where the Fire Breathers was first conceived.  I see the Ash Heap is still the same pile of pulverized bat-shit or Scorch-shit it was over two hundred years ago.   As I entered the building, I had a flood old memories resurface; the exodus from Vault 76, Flatwoods, the purification of Charleston, AVR Medical Center where the inoculation to scorch-plague was produced and the mining armor.  I spent another three weeks collecting any data I could so the Responders faction in the Commonwealth could have a fighting chance and not suffer the indignities of its predecessor.  Here's what I have below.

From the Recordings of Magnus Odinsohn, Mercenary, Explorer, and, Exspelled Resident of Vault 76

A special thank you and well-earned hug to Gwen McNamara for hiring me for this assignment. It fits my particular qualifications.  I, for most purposes, am a "ghoul."  FEV and radiation has altered my physiology to a weird degree of functioning.  I am for all purposes a mutant, some that Vault-Tec did not achieve for some decades after the Third World War.  I am capable of entering and scouting radioactive sites were most unaltered humans dare not venture.  Part of this assignment was to scout the immediate area Northwest of the Commonwealth of Boston and locate an undisclosed vault.   It took me a three weeks of exploration anmd a few martial encounters, but I found its location.

I was able to unseal the the main vault door with a Pip-Boy, a loaner from Vault 81.  They discovered a hidden Vault adjacent to Vault 81 a year ago and it had several holotapes, files, archives, including the description, operations, and location for a sister Vault, Vault 104.  It appears as McNamara put it, both were working on similar bio-sciences, but took different routes.  Anyway, where do I begin?  Uh, the entry ramp was similar to the entrance bays from Vault 111 and Vault 81. The Vault Bay inside 104 is in pristine shape despite over 200 years of isolated preservation.  No decayed bodies, no old sad telltale bullet holes or markings of previous firefights were found.  There was an unused desk, a reclining chair and three lockers.  The table is unadorned save a thick layer of dusk.  Ventilation was odd as I could feel a small breeze whisper through a semi-open gate.  I swept my geiger-counter across the vent and heard the ominous clicking and radiation.  It was gamma rays.  Whatever happened inside Vault 104 sterilized all organics inside of it.  The amount of radiation buried the needle on my geiger-counter.  By observation, the ventilation system and its radiation filters in the entrance bay are working on a low-battery power system via an electrical dynamo.

Oddly enough, the entrance doors leading into the depths of 104 are barred shut and needed an access code.  Where they planning to return at some date or did they not want anything getting out?

I began an inventory check of the lockers and their contents.  It was brief.  The first locker from left to right, contained 5 spare Vault 104 uniforms, in pristine condition, and draped in a long plastic bags to prevent dust and micro-particle contamination.  Second, accompanying the Vault-Tec uniforms were two obviously hazmat suits.  They looked like they torn inside with no regard for future use .  The second contained three unused pip-bays, in pristine condition.  The final locker held several holotapes, and a photo album with several old world pictures, all in pristine condition after two hundred or so years.

"To Lia Bennett, I hold you in my heart for all time."

I turned my attention next to the holotape.  I open my Pip-Boy played the disk.

"My name is Karl Bennett, Chief of Security of Vault 104.  Mac and I are the only two remaining survivors of this over-stated marvel of technology.  First, let it be known that I am responsible for the safety and liquidation of any emergencies that occur inside Vault 104.  It's in my job description. Second, If I ever meet Stanislaus Braun, my only goal will be to put several rounds in his unethical skull.  The bastard lied to us.  Vault 104 was sold as a safe haven from nuclear death, instead the research scientists used the inhabitants as guinea pigs.  The purpose of this vault was to modified the human immunophysiology and create a new strain of human that could rapidly regenerate blood and tissue damage in a matter of hours.  The research I secretly obtained suggested no less and 24, but no greater than 48 hours.  What happened in the Vaults final days was an outbreak of influenza, a super-strain of the common flu developed by our military in secret to use on the Chinese.  I'm not a microbiologist, but they were attempting to disrupt the human body's immune system, expose them to Influenza, then hyper-jump a weakened immune system in order to activate a new genome sequence."

"Judging from the chaos and the orders that came from Lia, my wife and the Vault overseer, it didn't work.  Three decades of research gone do to a clumsy accident and a brief error in judgement.  The mutated strain they engineered had a fatality margin of 99%.  My wife on her deathbed ordered the gamma ray projectors activated at full output.  The ventilation system to the lower level was to be sealed.  Nothing inside the lower Vault was to survive. I wept as I followed my wife's orders.  Damn Vault-Tec.  Damn them to Hell.  Nothing left here now.  Mac is pushing 60 and his wife left us 3 years ago. (Pause)  Anyway, Mac and I are taking what supplies we can salvage and the we are going to locate Vault 72.  Maybe we'll find sanctuary there.  This is Karl Bennett, Chief of Security, Vault 104 abandoning his post and signing off.  Heed my warning and good luck."

After shutting off the holotape, all I could say was damn.  I hope this will satisfy curious scholars and leave a historical record for tomorrow's generations.

Seriously, this petite darling with a French accent says she's from Quebec, north of the Great Lakes Wastelands.  Three years ago, she hitched a ride on a privately operated Vertibird then walked into the Commonwealth just to enlist with the Brotherhood of Steel.   When the Brotherhood arrived nearly three years ago, they set up outposts in this region, one being in Concord itself and the second being at the heavily fortifed bunker in the abandoned satelite station North above Dublin Diner.  When first interviewd, she spoke of the men in the Great Lakes Wasteland and how awful they are, in bed and in social behavior.  Most are aggressive, violent, hostile, and nearly impotent from constant radiation exposure and chemicals in the area.  The inhabitants in the ruins of Wilwuakee and Chicago call them "the Wildmen" as they are unprincipled and opoerate as slavers outside the region.  Some have been changed into mindless beasts with no cognitive faculties, "Trogs" she called them, void of reason or mercy.  The "heavy water" contents from the Great Lakes is the primary suspect as the region's pumping stations and purification centers have been inoperative since the opening day of the Third World War.   She seemed scared and reserved when providing information about the Trogs.  The intake interview on this particular subject did not go very well. 

...then there's Trudy.  She's been using Dublin Diner as a trading post for nearly a decade and uses this location as a male-heavy brothel with three bonified studs in her harem.  Having originated from Little Lamplight and Vault 87, Trudy (who has no last name) is a former raider (who claims to have operated outside the Capital Wasteland) turned shrewed ligitimate businesswomen that has managed to not only thrive and avoid The Institute, but survive North outisde the secure walls of Diamond City.  She counts the regions high inactivity, lack of raider gangs, and pacts she has made with the farmers, travelers, and Minutemen as the key elements of her survival.  She, however, was vague and lacked key details when questioned extensively about this region's merchant network.   Amongst her stable of men, there is Wolfgang who doubles as chem dealer and hired arm.  There is Robert (last name unknown, possibly from Little Lamplight and Vault 87) who works the fields across the road from the trading post and provides foodstuffs and crops for the Dublin Diner.  They have a history that goes back to their childhood.  Finally her son Patrick, an ex-jet addict pimping himself out as he works off a chem debt.  For women in the brothel, she has Gina Ripple working as a prostitute and doubling as a Wolfgang's bodyguard.  Then there is a freckle-face, spectacle-wearing orange tart going by the name Pumpkin as one of the other two female employees.  Trudy has a small cannery behind the Diner and has trained Pumpkin in the preparation and sanitation of canned foodstuffs.  In an agreement with BoS, Shanna was able to loan out canning equipment and two Mr. Handys as field workers and food preps for the Cannery.  Pumpkin seems to have knack with droid repair and programming and would benefit herself and Dublin Diner with a proper education and training. 

In closing, Trudy has Diamond City's doctor come out once per week to purchase medical supplies and examine its prostitutes (both male and female) for sexual transmitted diseases.   Don't call Trudy Madame as she has no business obligations or contracts with any of these prostitutes.  They work for her and she for them in a mutual benefits pack.  It's strickly business.

Shanna is making her mark as an operative and pointman (pointwoman but who cares) in this area and BoS would gain nothing in this region without her attributes, skill set, and input.  After a night with Trudy's son in a sleeping bag, all I can say in Shanna's words, "I savor the taste of Patrick's 12 inch cock and all the cum from his balls.  The more spunk on my face, the more I like it."    What can I say, "If she wants to work as a swallow for the Brotherhood, then by all means sign her up for the BoS!  She's gotta be good for something."

Consider armed and dangerous 

What could have been a bloody demise turned into a life-changing business opportunity for this young lady, and most of all, how she managed to convince James Rasmys otherwise, or its circumstances leading to it, has never been revealed.  Undisclosed sources say they have a familial relationship or bloodline (lost kin is a common theme in the old Virginian states and Maryland) and James Rasmys (a corruption of his family's surname) grants her a special status inside that organization.  Others say the Colonel enjoys underaged girls (especially ten to fourteen year olds).  Compounding this relationship is what  traits he saw in this pot-smoking thirteen year-old at the time of her capture.  Others say she sold out her community of Clearhead (Boston - Not associated with the Commonwealth - See article 2290.11.04a) and eliminated its five-man council to gain James Rasmys' favor.  The truth being, she is a undoubtly his personal favorite and enjoys her bodily presence now and again as a private couple or in a sadomachocistic ménage-a-trois.  Shelly has been known to sell her body to collect revenue from prostitution.  She understands the economics of prostitution but slavery sickens her and does such enterprises as an armed business and only if ordered by Colonel Rasmys.  Shelly however will not bed women, lesbian or group sex or unless she is with Rasmys and his favorite sexual instruments (The Colonel is known to enjoy implimenting studded leather straps, whips, and riding crops in his personal escapades).

She has a comfortable relationship with the Gunners and distributes (i.e. she sells mostly) a variety of marijuana-based products to the settlements around and outside the Commonwealth and the Old Capital Wasteland.  She gives the Colonel Rasmys his cut for weapons, equipment and mercenaries to protect her on her expeditions and she in turn pays any extra personnel she is willing to hire before she takes her cut.  Discipline is tight and harsh and exact percentages are not known but the operation is said to be extremely lucrative.  She's been known to travel west as far as Megaton, Vault 101, and Turnberry Tower and north (via sea vessel - another lead that needs to be investigated) into the Old state of Maine and some parts of lower Canada and Newfoundland (which is said to be free of radioactivity and other bio-contaminations).  It's through her to Magnus Odinsohn that the existence of Vault 57 and Vault 67 came to knowledge.

Ah finally.  I have some power in my Pip-Boy.  I thought I would need to salvage another Pip-Boy from Vault 98.  Speaking of which, we have new arrivals, most likely off-world and I have no doubt they are.  From Commander Sofia Daguerre, a friend and lover long gone, I learn the U.S.S.A. and of the one of the last deep space programs established by the old American government.  But what the general population didn't know or was kept in the dark was the existence of Vault 98.  Vault-Tec's corporate officers were left in the dark about its existence and location, save it name.  Located in George Washington National Forest (of Virginia) outside and well east of Beckley, West Virginia around the Summer of 2285, Vault 98 was discovered by myself, Jeffrey N. Williams, Holly Krieger, Mililani Deccabus, Sun-Nee MacIntyre, and Praxys, our assaultron.  Its exterior has suffered rusted indignities of 200 years, but once opened with the aid of stylized Pip-Boy Model 98 .  It's interior, including Overseer's Office and Science Labs were well-pristine.  After exploring the Vault for 3 days, we discovered it was like no other Vault ever produced.  It had the technology only envisioned in Science fiction movies of the 20th century.  It had a working Stargate, or rather what the researchers lovingly called it, a Mass Transit Arch.  Once full power was restored, I shivered at the next discovery.  It's on-line system was dubbed M.O.D.U.S.  I remember that abomination from my early days, after the Exodus of Vault 76.  I remembered the name, ENCLAVE.  Sun-Nee  knew them all to well.  Did a faction escape off-world two hundred years ago and if so why were its transport logs erased?  Did something go through the M.T.A.?  or did something come out?

I think Vault 86 would be interested in their technologies and astrological research.

Although males are selected first in social functions, as they were lifted from slavery and strife, this species mates for life and follows the surname of the wife, not husband.  It is an honor system that promote both sexes.  Their political structure and lineage is gynachical in function and its moral code and codex was established by their Goddess, a deitess of their moon and stars.  Do not be surprised if women of their world hold positions of authority and power.  They find the concept and definition of gender fluidity hilarious.  This species is dependant upon each other.  Bio-chemically, they mate for life.

Back to the Responders..,

I heard the survivors fled and entered into the remains of other cities.  They may great strides in Philadelphia and Trenton New Jersey after their near-disastrous encounters with the Scorchbeasts (See file 2201.10.23.-25.76) and the Raider Clans of the Savage Divide.  Philadelphia and Trenton (well the southwestern portion of that city) remained mostly intact and had little in opposition.  The subways and lower sections of the city remained radiation free and salvageable.  Great resources to set up an operation and one that was better than Charleston, West Virginia.  It's true from my point-of-view that they brought their destruction upon themselves by being too vocal and to forward in their approach to aiding the remaining population of West Virginia after the war.  My best estimates say their were well over 4,000 to 6,000 survivors driven to the various outskirts of the 35th state.

In the days following and after the destruction of the Scorchbeasts and their enslaved minions (for simplicity's sake they were dubbed the Scorch), the surviving Responders took to rebuilding their membership and equipment, including the EX-17 Excavator Armor developed by Garrahan Mining Company.  Heavily active in the months before October 23rd, Garrahan was a large supplier of raw ore to the United State War Machine and was looking for a means to excavate more ore and beat their competitors, the Hornwrights at the bargaining tables.  I will say one thing about the EX-17, those technical files were not easy to acquire.  My associates at the time had to contend with two creatures the survivors dubbed Wendigo in order to study and assembled this marvel of technology.  The Wendigos were not easy to vanquish.

Natalie Daye - Field Operative, The Responders of the Commonwealth

Sorry, I'm meandering about days long gone.  Ah Ms. Natalie Daye, yes, she the point-man or point-woman if you wish to contact the Responder with a situation regarding health and welfare of the people of the northern Commonwealth.  Natalie is a descendant from vault 85, located outside the Capital Wasteland, but she works for the inhabitants of Vault 110.  Their director of Vault 110 is a scientist, a older woman and her two grandchildren.  You need to arranged a meeting or appointment with Dr. Milana Vermuelen if you need their services.  Her grandson Eric is a Fire-breather and her granddaughter works as a field medic.  The Responders are not mercenaries.  They are farmers, hygienists, traders, doctors, veterinarians, educators, investigators (scouts), firefighters and most of all, response-and-rescue.  They leave the day-to-day fighting to Riley's Rangers or the Minutemen.  If you want them to clean up a toxic spill or remove left-over contamination they the people you need to see.  Do you need free roaming robots deactivated, talk to Natalie Day or the Crew. The have a few Verti-birds in service and can likely do air-and-rescue.  They operate from Vault 110 outside of Concord.  They will rescue and remove cryptid infestations but they do not engage in confrontation with raider clans or other mercenary groups.  They solve problems and do not pick fights.

Messing around with a newer character, one Natalie Daye, and took some inspiration from the internet and Fallout Nexus to boot.

I used the Natalie Portman Character from the Nexus.  It's a save game, so you'll need to load it into your save game files then save the character itself under the LooksMenu mod if you wish to modify her as your own individual character.  I went with a smaller tighter bust, a waifish trim, and a nearly thin model-like figure.  I wanted people to see that she was healthy but suffered from low protein and milk intake.  Second, I borrowed a breast design from one of the models off the web.  Since they are free to download and considered as advertisement, why not? 

Anyway, Natalie Daye of Vault 85.

The years is 2287 and 8 months after the Lone Survivor was released from cryogenic suspension.  After her first feeding, the next question on her mind is..,

Vault 61 is a Vault-Tec Vault located under the ruins of central Detroit. Conceived as a part of the pre-war Vault Program, Vault 61 never became fully operational, either as a functioning Vault or a part of Vault-Tec’s social experiments.

History
Vault 61 was conceived as a part of the Vault-Tec social experiment program before the Great War. Like many other Vaults, it was geared towards a specific experiment, in this case to measure human responses to extreme duress and the degree of sacrifice one would make for a guarantee of safety. While it would be fully functional and sealed from the outside world, Vault 61 was designed with minimal comforts and a deliberate lack of space for its inhabitants.

Instead, the intent was that Vault 61 would be run more akin to a maximum security prison. Once inside, the population would be stripped of any personal goods they possessed, separated and organized into shifts and rosters by the staff that were intended to break up pre-existing groups. The population would be forced to perform labor inside the Vault and then confined to cell-like quarters otherwise. Those cells would contain a minimum of personal comforts, afford very little privacy and be subject to random searches in order to check for any contraband substances.

Meals would be strictly rationed and exchanged for good behavior and continued labor, and could be withheld as punishment for any slight, real or imagined. Similarly, entertainment would be minimal, and treated as being more of a privilege or a reward then anything else. Likewise, visits with friends and family were to be treated as a reward, and were entirely dependent on the behavior of all parties involved.

At the same time, the staff of Vault 61 were to be encouraged to be as brutal, harsh and unforgiving as possible, and to lord over their charges. Unfair and preferential treatment was to be actively encouraged, with the hope of building an ‘us against them’ mentality of the staff versus the general population. The staff would also be given visibly better quarters, facilities, entertainment and rations in order to emphasize how much better off they were.

The key focus of the experiment was that members of the population would be free to leave at any time once the Vault had passed the one hundred and eighty-day minimum safety period. However, they would also be fed a healthy dose of propaganda in the form of ‘scientific reports’ that would indicate that the surface was a completely uninhabitable irradiated wasteland, and that to leave would mean an agonizing and painful but inevitable death. Thus the population would be given a choice between their harsh lives of deprivation in safety and the fear of the unknown. The Overseer and their staff were also to be given the option of extending the all-clear period if they thought it would serve the experiment’s purposes.

However, the Vault was not completed before the Great War broke out. Originally slated for a 2075 opening, the schedule slipped constantly as it was subject to numerous delays and other problems. Mechanical and electrical faults occurred throughout the construction, with a Vault-Tec internal investigation revealing that the Vault was using substandard materials and the team were pocketing the change. A forced reorganization of the team and the need to re-do a lot of the work set the project back and left its budget spiraling out of control. Added to the problem was the degenerating situation within Detroit itself, with rioting and out of control crime serving to further delay construction.

While the project was behind schedule, Vault-Tec had at least recruited an Overseer for Vault 61. Roscoe Muckwaller had been the warden at the Detroit House of Correction for a number of years, and had taken a particularly harsh and brutal approach to his duties. Muckwaller lorded over the inmates like a petty-minded tyrant, acting in a particularly heavy-handed and brutal manner. He enjoyed personally delivering savage beatings to those who acted up, broke the rules, stepped out of line or he just plain didn’t like. At the same time, he was deeply corrupt, accepting generous bribes to allow material to be smuggled into the prison. He also was taking money from the US Military and private companies, selling them prisoners for use as experimental test subjects.

At the same time, he promoted a culture of fear among the other staff, making it clear that anyone who questioned him or his actions would suffer the consequences. Those that did would find themselves having accidents, such as being ‘mistakenly’ locked in a cell full of violent inmates. This culture of fear had ensured that Muckwaller would remain on top and be able to lord over the prison as his own kingdom.

Ironically, Muckwaller’s career ended in late 2074, but not due to any corruption or abuse of power on his part. Instead he was bought down by a scandal involving himself, a transvestite prostitute, a power fist and a can of CRAM. Forced to retire, Muckwaller was almost immediately recruited by Vault-Tec who saw him as being perfect for their experiment. After being told exactly what it was he would be doing, he readily signed up, using it as a chance to not only once more flex his muscles but also get away from the many enemies he had made along the way. He spent the next two years as a guest of the company, living it up in a series of hotel suits while construction of the Vault dragged on, serving to only further stress the Vault’s budget.

By mid-October 2077, Vault 61 was considered to be functionally complete. However, testing of its systems prior to going live with the experiment showed that there were still a number of problems that needed to be ironed out. None the less, Vault-Tec green-lit the experiment and began to enter it into its early stages. Muckwaller was secretly relieved by this as he had been receiving threats for some months now and had not told Vault-Tec for fear they would replace him. Now he saw the Vault as a way to escape from his enemies.

On the morning of October 23rd, the Vault had only a skeleton staff present as it was still undergoing tests to iron out the last few problems. Muckwaller was being taken on a familiarization tour of the Vault prior to being moved in, so that he could begin the operational stage of the experiment as soon as possible. When the alert came of an actual nuclear attack, Muckwaller produced a gun and forced the rest of the staff from the Vault. Once they were out, he sealed himself inside the Vault.

His plan was to ride out whatever was happening, confident that his enemies would either all be dead or, if nothing else, have other things to worry about. Having familiarized himself with the operations manual, the experiment and its procedures, he simply settled in to wait out until the one hundred and eighty-day minimum period had passed and then receive he all-clear from Vault-Tec. And while those days did prove to be somewhat harrowing, given his isolation from any contact with anyone else, he did manage to survive.

On day hundred and eighty, Muckwaller waited in his office the entire day for some signal from Vault-Tec, one way or another. When none arrived, he concluded that the company had either been destroyed in the nuclear configuration or, at least, had lost contact with the Vaults. Concerned for what he might find outside, he opted to wait another one hundred and eighty days, figuring form his limited knowledge of nuclear warfare that a year would be enough for the radiation levels to be somewhat safe outside.

He spent the next six months preparing himself as best he could for whatever hazards lay beyond. Having been overweight for much of his life, he did his best to get into shape and improve his health. He familiarized himself with all the equipment that was intended for use by the security staff, and spent time on a makeshift target range to improve his aim. He taught himself more about the medical technology inside the vault, especially the anti-radiation medicines that they stocked. All the while, he was also careful to monitor the Vault’s systems for any signal at all from Vault-Tec, only to find none was coming. Finally on the 23rd of October, 2078, Muckwaller was ready to go. He headed back to the Vault entrance and activated the controls to re-open the door.

Nothing happened.

After several more ever increasingly frantic efforts, Muckwaller found that the door was not responding at all. The diagnostics reported that all systems were green, but the door continued to fail to respond. As minutes turned into hours, he checked and re-checked every piece of equipment that he could access and found that there was nothing wrong or missing; rather, the door was not working at all, as if sealed in place by some act of malice. This train of thought lead him to one conclusion; that his enemies had over-ridden the door controls from the outside and sealed him inside the Vault to die.

While absurdly paranoid, this train of thought became Muckwaller’s guiding principle. The Vault was his prison, a trap made by his enemies to finally kill him. However, rather then succumbing (“It’s what they want”) he instead remained determined to survive as long as he could and get his final revenge by outliving all his enemies in the safety of the prison they had built for him. At the same time, he clung to a tiny spark of hope that the Vault would be found and he would be rescued.

These two things would sustain him for the next twenty-two years as Muckwaller lived out his life alone in his underground prison. He alternated between periods of lucidity and madness as he tried to find whatever way he could to pass the time in his determination to outlive his enemies. However, even in his most deranged moments he was careful not to do anything that might threaten the existence or functionality of the Vault, and did the best he could with his limited skills to keep it running.

On October 23rd, 2100, Roscoe Muckwaller celebrated his 23rd anniversary of his life underground and the end of the world by getting uproariously drunk on the last remaining alcohol he could find in the Vault. Stumbling out of his office completely inebriated, he tripped and fell on the stairs down to the main atrium and shattered his spine. Completely immobilized but aware, he spent the next few days staring at the ceiling before finally dying of thirst and starvation.

Description

Located in the middle of Detroit, Vault 61 was built below the historic Michigan Theatre and occupied much of a city block. Only the Vault entrance and atrium were located directly below the theater. The rest of the Vault was built further underground, and accessed through an elevator; this was done both to protect the Vault from a nuclear attack and also to further restrict access. Damage to the building over time has left access to the Vault difficult but not impossible, but doing such would require moving rubble away from the entrance. As a result, Vault 61’s existence is largely unknown to the population of the Detroit Wasteland.

Vault 61 used the large, side-sliding style doors seen on the late-model Vaults located in the Commonwealth (such as Vaults 81 or 111). This was a change made late in the design process due to the troubled nature of the construction process and the desire to produce as inescapable a vault as possible. Ironically, the design of the door was also what trapped Overseer Muckwaller inside, due to a wiring fault in the control panel caused by the substandard materials used during construction. The result was that the door reported as operating perfectly, but in fact was not relaying signals from the control panel to the door mechanism.

Vault 61 is built along the same guidelines as most other Vault-Tec vaults, but with several significant differences for its proposed experiment. Rather then the family bunkrooms common to many other Vaults, the living quarters for the inhabitants were structured like prison cells, with two bunk beds, a chemical toilet that offered no actual privacy and doors that could only lock from the outside. These cells were left deliberately bare and undercoated, designed to encourage an oppressive atmosphere. There was no allocation for personal possessions, with everything to instead come from a communal pool, even down to the Vault Suits.

Other living spaces within the vault were designed to be similarly oppressive. All other spaces were intended to be communal, with no privacy available to the inhabitants and little in the way of decoration. Flat grey was the predominant color scheme of the vault’s interior, with a stark lack of the blues and yellows common to other Vault-Tec facilities. The only decor came in the form of propaganda posters, intended to reinforce the message that survival was dependent on obedience.

The Vault was also equipped with a series of workshops that were to be used to manufacture parts for use in its upkeep. These were to be staffed entirely by its inhabitants, who would undertake forced labor in exchange for rations. An open, excavated area made up of nothing but bedrock was also provided to be used for hard labor where the Vault Dwellers would be forced to excavate a Vault extension that would never be constructed.

Conversely, the staff lived in far better conditions, and were kept entirely segregated from the rest of the population. The staff all enjoyed separate quarters that were somewhat luxurious by Vault standards, and were encouraged to flaunt their relative wealth and comfort whenever possible in order to provoke reactions from the general population. The Overseers’s office was designed to deliberately overlook the main dining hall, adding to the oppressive atmosphere.

The rest of Vault 61’s design was relatively conventional and straightforward, and featured standard utilities common to many Vaults. These included a Vault-Tec super reactor for power, water and waste recycling, hydroponic gardens and so on. Originally, the Vault was intended to be equipped with a half dozen RobCo Protectrons for use in controlling the population. The charging cradles and control terminals were installed, but due to electrical faults the Protectrons themselves were never delivered.

Because it was never intended for use in re-population or recolonization of the surface, Vault 61 lacked a G.E.C.K. or any other sophisticated equipment beyond what was needed for its experiment. It did have a stockpile of security armor and common firearms (N99 10mm pistols, submachine guns and riot shotguns) for use in suppressing the population. Likewise, it had well-stocked medical reserves, installed in the anticipation of frequent violence.

Muckwaller left his own impact on the Vault during his time there, chiefly in the form of various projects undertaken to occupy his time or born of his increasing madness, many of which remain to this day. Some of the highlights include:

- His collection of empty liquor bottles, all stored and arranged meticulously over twenty-three years

- A makeshift target range

- A lengthy rambling manifesto written on the walls of one of the cells

- Vault suits draped over various objects to act as substitutes for actual people, arranged in various configurations around - the Vault to represent different groups. These include prisoners, staff, therapy groups, decoys and his mother.

- His journal, kept on the Overseer’s terminal and updated semi-regularly over the years. Its content ranges from factual reporting to incoherent rants

- A half-written novel, also stored on a terminal, concerning the adventures of a transvestite prostitute who murders journalists with a power fist. The book was worked on sporadically over the years.

- A model of a planned ‘perfect community’ built out of cardboard boxes and toilet paper tubes

- His skeleton still lies where he died, at the bottom of the stairs coming out from the Overseer’s office, and still clad in a vault suit. In its pocket is a list of his enemies; not only does it include those that would logically have a grudge against him, but also those that had no connection to him at all (e.g. Chinese Chairman Cheng), those who were already dead (e.g. Nikolai Tesla) and a few who were entirely fictional (e.g. the Easter Bunny).

As a result of both the problems it encountered during construction and its being neglected for nearly two hundred years, Vault 61 has fallen into a decrepit state. Sections of it are structurally unsound, and a few have collapsed or caved in altogether. Power to parts of the Vault is either non-existent or sporadic, and many of the electrical systems no longer function. An untreated leak in the water recycling system has left the lower reaches of the Vault flooded. Given time, Vault 61 will likely succumb to entropy and its own design flaws.

Ironically, the exterior access is to the main door is still functional, but would require a user with a Pip-Boy 3000 Mk IV to activate it.

Opening Statement:

I've been contracted by several factions, most namely Vault 81, the newly assembled Minutemen, the Brotherhood of Steel, and even the science hub of Diamond City, to gather and share data and other field reports regarding the religious factions across five to six old federal states.  This brief logs simply outline on such group known as the Children of the Atom.

"Ah, the Children..,  what would the wastelands be like without you?  Your fervent glow, your willingness to turn yourself into feral ghouls, your dedication to all things plutonium and the ability to sit and meditate on a hot atomic pile or was that an undetonated atomic bomb...."

"No.  Seriously, They're a bunch of wack jobs from Megaton inside the Capital Wasteland to the Glowing Sea south of the Commonwealth and scattered cliques and outposts North of Old Massachusetts to the islands and coasts of Maine.  Trust me, I've scouted well over 1500 miles or 0000 kilometers from the Ash Heap and Vault 96 of West Virginia all the way in the feral North of Maine and Nova Scotia.   Highly motivated with no regards for their personal safety and health and well-armed with Gamma Guns, Fat-Men, and nuclear tipped missile launchers, these zealots and fanatics woulds like nothing more than to spread radioactive contamination and all its "holy communion" to ever corner of the north eastern Americas and beyond, as if the Scorchbeasts almost two hundred years ago weren't bad enough.  My advise is to stay away from these religious retards and far away as possible.  Heavily armored troops of BoS and their support personnel trained in radioactive protocols are your best defense, especially the former.  I would send in one or two infiltrators to see if the possess any conventional atomic warheads.   Many of their zealous religious leaders would NOT hesitate to detonate a live atomic warhead and join their god in communion if it meant obliterating their enemies.   These fools simply can't comprehend the forces they worship and harness through simple common sense or education.  I know the schooling simple inside Washington D.C. and the Commonwealth isn't what it once as some two hundred and twelve years ago.  I know it's wrecked beyond repair.   Trust me when I say this, we're better off without them.

My advise, enlist with the Minutemen, The Brotherhood of Steel, or the Enclave.   At least they have Rad-X and Radaway.

By the way, Vault-Tec never acknowledged the existence of Sub-Vaults beneath Vault 75, Vault 111, Vault 112 and Vault 114.  It didn't acknowledge a sub-vault beneath Vault-Tec headquarters in Washington DC nor the satellite transmission towers disguised among the formidable skyscrapers of Boston.  The U.S. Military and Enclave never knew about the backdoor observation software Braun had secretly installed in all Vaults, key installations, and critical institutions if the Societal Preservation Project were to succeed.  Neither did it acknowledged the trans-dimensional telepads that link the some of Vaults built along the East Coast.   Once awakened from 114 and then transferred to Vault 111, she would be re-instated with no memory of events but have the necessary knowledge, skills, and materials (with workbenches) to achieve her objectives.

Good God, what was Dr. Braun and the Corporate Executives of Vault-Tec up too?  Braun was either a genius, or mad, or both who had his fingers in every bit of technological invention that caught his attention.  Where they planning to use the Societal  Preservation Program outside the stated bounds to advance human evolution and create a superior breed of humanity?  It wasn't until 5 years after her release from Vault 111, did Mililani Deccabus learn her true origins and purpose in the grand schemes of Enclave and Vault-Tec.  

Thanks to the unintended use of the Memory Lounge in Good Neighbor, Mililani had several memory caps "popped" revealing a devious objective from a flood of synaptic activity and stored information held in her Pip-Boy. All facts came into play.  She was a loyal employee, a Vault-Tec engineer and technological analyst, stored away in stasis in an undisclosed sub-section of Vault 114. Her primary programming via the Memory Chairs was two fold. Her first primary objective to retrieve salvageable Vault-Tec property and its technologies from various locations across post-nuclear Boston.  Her second primary task was revive and activate the main broadcast towers across the Commonwealth so Vault-Tec can proceed in rebuilding America's infrastructure.  Finally, she was to secure the front entrance of Vault 114 and eliminate all unauthorized occupants squatting inside of it. 

Much like her contemporary Vault-Dweller, Anjela Snow-Woman, she was biologically engineered to be the next push in human evolution via selective breeding and human genetic modification.  First, she needed to find Shaun, her missing son.  The duty to the Vault Tec and necessity of motherhood weighs heavily on her shoulders.  Most of all, was Dr. Braun still alive ten years later after his disastrous encounter with James and his daughter Sun-Nee MacIntyre? 

Someone must be issuing her new orders.

Zoey Goldschmitt - a hard and bitter Ex-Gunner mercenary with a knack for androids hails from Little Lamplight and Vault 87.  She has taken a vow to track and eliminate the murderous association called Talon Company to the last man.  That 's if she can get away from the Gunners first.  Zoey's bad reputation and hard luck seems to follow her where ever she goes.  Now she's here in the Commonwealth of Boston to fulfill the vow of a dying friend.

The Caprice Sisters - Well, let's just say Vault 108 has several sub-levels and "Gary" wasn't the only clone to leave the Capital Wasteland.  A series of clones, 108 groups in all, are stored in cryogenic sleep deep inside 5 localized sub-basements.  The Caprice Sisters, from that same Vault, are, if not worse, than Gary-Series clone that plagues the Capital Wasteland.  Thy are the most recognized and beautiful female clones in post-nuclear America.  A warning to the wise and foolish, If you see twins beware.  Rumor says there are five of them in any given group and they function very well as a team and are trained combat fighters.  

Siobahn Shivers - this prudish woman wouldn't be caught dead without her power armor.  Born in Megaton near Vault 101 and recruited into the Brotherhood of Steel when she turned 13, has spent the 17 years of her time and life on the outskirts of Northern Maryland or within the traveling ranks of the Brotherhood.  Now she is on a solo mission, searching for a traitor to the Brother in a place the locals of the Commonwealth call Nuka-World.

Sun-Nee MacIntyre - Except no substitutes, she is the Daughter of James MacIntyre, Founder of Project Purity representing Vault 101.  Her current mission is to catalog the location of other Vaults outside the Capital Wasteland for the Brotherhood of Steel and Naval Science Institute.  She's here to make contact with Vault 81 with the possibility of establishing a secure trade route.  Her second mission is to find the main entrance to the Lost Vault, Vault 117.  There is something inside that Vault the Brotherhood of Steel desperately needs.

Magnus "My Blood is Type-0 Green" Odinsohn - Originally from West Virginia and an original inhabitant, Magnus is one of thee oldest living survivors of Vault 76.  The only male of this group and has ghoulified not once, but on three other occasions and has been cured each time.  A combination of multiple viral infections, anti-viral meds, and stasis pods has kept alive for nearly 210 years with no sign of slowing down.  Trained as Green Beret and as a Park Ranger, Magnus spent the first five years stabilizing the Appalachians before venturing in Maryland, Eastern Pennsylvania, and the Commonwealth of Boston (Circumnavigated and marked the outer most boundaries of the Glowing Sea) to stabilize other parks and wilderness habitats.  He wears his Vault-suit (Marked with the numbers 76 ) under his Park Ranger uniform proudly.  Magnus is deadly proficient with his modified fire axe.  If you can get past the scares all over his body, he's the best ally and the most knowledgeable forester you can ever have.

Corporate records from Vault 100 discribe in detail this structure as an embryotic Vault with breeding and veterinarian facilities.  Since then, this vault has fallen into a state of deterioration (essentially a derelict faculty) and with no active personel, no functioning technology or technological capabilities.  Data retrieved via mercenary operatives point to an influenza outbreak mutated by FEV.  It is reported on disc that an outbreak killed the animal stock first then "jumped" to the Vault-Tec residents and scientists.  It must've kileld them quickly as the vault's fire scrubbers were never activated.  Scouts and Acquisition Agents of Vault-Tec are advise to burn any vault suits bearing the number 24.  Pathogen is active but in a state of dormancy.  Why were they experiementing on FEV?  The virology used from information collected from their database is not part of Vault-Tec's Research and Development paradigm.  It's as if they had violated Vault-Tec's "closed door" potocols and outside help in developing this pathogen.

"Become the Overseer of Vault 24.  What the Hell!  Why not?  Beats sitting in the heat that is the Mojave Wasteland.  My employers said it will be fun and paid me handsomely to investigate Vault 24 for re-habitation, but a rather vicious mole-rat sow has split my shin bone in two.., with her large bare teeth.  It was so quick I didn't feel a thing.  I'm bleeding out and my stimpacks aren't much help.  I've laid out as musch rat poison as I could, but the numbers are on their side.  I had to enter the Vault 24 to deactivate the PA system.  This place is an abandoned library with most of the data discs and hard-cover books torn to shreads.  This place is infested with mole-rats and radroaches.  They claws, bite and devour anything comes with their rather large nest.  Good luck and wear some power armor when you enter."

The nuclear reactor is operating on a jury-rigged system and remains sealed.  Shielded Mr. Handy models are operating at a level of expectable staus.  Vault 100 has considereed hiring aand training ghoul technicans to maintain a high level of management until the reactor can be serviced and deactivated.  Control functions for now  are maintained via remote terminals and satelite transmitters from Vault 03.  As of last year, Vault 03 was reclaimed and all unauthorized personel have been liquidated from corporate property.  The Interior of Vault 34 is still highly radioactive and is unsuitable of rehabitation.  Avoid access and entry until the Vault's reactor is deactivated.

"The Western Vault"

Vault 45 was a control vault located near Riverton, Wyoming.  Vault 45 was designed via its location as to position it approximately 200 or such miles away from any other residential vaults or bomb shelters.  Isolation of this control group and its vault was the key paradigm to the Societal Preservation Program.  The idea was to create a community from the ground up free and away from future external cultural (except for historical factors) contamination.  Vault 45 is a true control group with no covert agenda.  Its opening date was set for 80 years in 2157.  this vault, from corporate records, came equipped with a G.E.C.K.  Similar to Vault 92, Vault 45 was marketed, however, as to preserve Western culture and heritage among a variety of ethnicities and creeds in the Western regions of the United States.  Vault 45 would have state of the art building faculties, seed vaults, embryonic arc to repopulate pure strain animals, and a fully functional G.E.C.K.

"The Scavenger's Vault"

The original purpose of this vault or what contents it housed is lost in the winds of history.  A scavenger and junk trader, one Marc "The Scrapper" Sendricks discovered the main vault entrance and a crate of discarded but functional Pip-Boys some 80 years ago.  Gaining access to Vault 57 provided Scrapper with the financial opportunity of a lifetime.  With a network of like-minded merchants and scavengers, he began buying or barter guns, workbenches, C.A.M.P.s, armor, junk and various discarded technologies he could grasp with his dirty hands.  Almost a decade later, acquisition agents (armored for a fight)  from Vault 100 entered what would become a sprawling junkyard.  With the intent of driving what they called "Squatters' from their corporate property, Scrapper convinced Vault 100 to let him and his appointed successors protect and operate the Vault and in turn Vault 100 would get choice picks on any scrap, salvage, and technology he could purchase or acquire.  Vault 100, with its resources stretched thin, could not pass up an excellent offer and and at the same time have an operative working within the Commonwealth of Old Boston.  Sendrick's passed away in his sleep some 25 years ago a happy and contented man knowing this location would become one of Vault-Tec's more successful operations.  The current "Overseer" is a large and somewhat pacified Super-Mutant always seen wearing a pair of clean spectacles with a demeanor expressing trade and salvage .

"The Penal Colony"

This vault was never completed before October 23rd, 2077.  Vault 61 lain in abandoned and somewhat ruin until some 10 years ago when an expedition from Vault 100 discovered the main door was sealed but functional.  With the power generators restored, the vault was brought up to a minimum of functionality as the access its potential.  Vault 100's Board of Directors decided to finish its construction and bring the installation to full operational capacity.  Vault 61 would become a penal colony of sorts.  Housing the worse criminals and psychopathic to rise after the post-nuclear devastation of the Great War

"The Radaway Vault"

Vault 68 was meta-control group, a gage, and a health barometer for the some 22-25 Vault (control) Groups.  It was intended to be a mix-salad and to see if the vault could function with various personalities and ethnicities and to see if conflict resolution could be obtained without oversight or overseer discretion.  To add pressure and another antagonizing variable, Vault 68 was opened exactly three hours after the bombs fell on the Eastern Coast.  Modified eye-bots (E-M pulse and radiation resistant) were dispatched to recruit survivors in the immediate area of Trenton, New Jersey.  999 random recipients had exactly three hours to reach the main vault before it sealed once again.  Survivors would be administered anti-radiation treatments and then shown to their new quarters.  A new life would proceed as if their old life never mattered.

"The Perfect Mate"

Twin Vaults maintained by two overseers and whose experimental function strictly separates the residencies on the basis of their physical sex and gender.  Homosexuality and other deviant forms of sexuality or expression are simple eradicated or expelled for the purpose of this heterosexual experiment.  Housing of both sexes occurs in two separate dormitories.  While Vault 75 was conducting unethical experiments to breed the ultimate soldier, Records from Vault 100 indicate that Vault 69 was breeding both sexes to become the perfect mates with abilities into the empathic spectrum of behavior.  

Vault 72 - (Location: 12 miles south of Baltimore, Maryland)

"The Hospital"

Heavily fortified by barriers, wreckage, and collapsed rubble, patrolled on a rotating basis via a coveted contract with Talon Company.  Vault 72 maintains some security with eye-bots and military combat droids.  Starting out as another control group, but with a stated function and purpose after the events that transformed post-apocalyptic America.  Vault 72 is simply a large medical faculty and hospital.  All individuals inside Vault 72 are trained doctors, physicians, medical technicians, or researchers.  Security is done via robots and Talon Company.  It's not unusual to find both or all three operating hand-in-hand.

The entrance to this vault around the bend away direct line-of-sight.  It holds a social isolation experiment still operational after two hundred years to the present day.  Located along the Interstate 270 and used by merchant caravans, astute merchants with pip boys, use the Vault 77's vast warehouse to store scavenged goods, computers, robots, and military hardware.  Vault 77 is a multi-dimensional habitat/teserract, isolation cell, and warehouse stationed with Vault 77 but separated from the main experiment.

"The Stressor Vault"

Vault 85 was a large commorancy for it inhabitants, designed to be a stressor, and all of whom had little or no engineering skills.  The technology and equipment was designed to stress the registered inhabitants with a consistent state of needy repairs.  All equipment and useful devices were designed to break randomly, others at timed intervals, and eventually became unrepairable.  Ineffectiveness was a commonplace theme  All technology had a life expectancy no more than five years, save the Overseer's Office, the main Power Generator (Cecil, a Mr. Handy was assigned as the reactors repair technician), and the Mechanism operating the Vault 85's main door.  Within 24 months in operation, Vault 85 was abandoned.  It's inhabitants and descendants live outside the Vault 85 in a pastoral community with a near Amish attitude towards technology.  When the inhabitants of Vault 92 fled the experiments of their vault, they found acceptance with the community of Vault 85.  Vault 85 possessed a G.E.C.K. in its inventory.

Vault 98's true function was to gauge and study a Mass Transport Arch (M.T.A.) discovered three centuries ago (roughly 1930) in Egypt.  Activated so long ago and after its quantities were gauged, It's home in Cheyenne Mountain was decommissioned then refurbished for neuro-cybernetic experiments at Vault-Tec's request.  Vault-Tec's Board of Directors relocated to Vault 100 days before October 23rd to continue its observation of the M.T.A.  Its current Board of Directors has a vested interest in the activities of Vault 98 and knows that it is still functional and fully operational, even to the present day.

Vault 100 opened exactly 100 years to day after it was secured shut.  Now the ten block area around Vault 100 is in full operation with a population of 10,000 governed by Vault-Tec's CEO and a governing board via corporate hierarchy.  Vault 100 is a true corporate government.

"The Nano-Vault" 

Access to the vault's main entrance room is simple with any serviceable Pip-Boy.  The inner doors that lead to the lower levels are sealed from both sides of the vault.  Nothing organic, (except someone in the Overseer's office) is alive and surviving the high levels of gamma radiation scrubbing the remaining vault structure clean and sterile.  The science teams of Vault 104 were engaged in experiments that focused on immunophysiology and molecular generation via blood platelets and regenerating nannites.   Reassembling a host from the ground up, literally was the unethical goal of Vault 104.

It seems the experiments conducted on the inhabitants of Vault 110 were a success with over 75% of a population of 1000 responded to a mixture of genetic manipulation and organelle grafting.  Longevity experimentation and the application of Anti-Aging pharmaceuticals on its Vault Residents, resulted in some inhabitants are well over two hundred and twelve years old by 2212.

"Liar's Lair" 

The vault itself is maintained by the A.I. overseer.  Only the A.I grants access into and out of the vault.  Designed to be an experiment similar to Vault 21, Vault 113 inhabitants are all habitual or pathological liars.

"The Lost Vault"

What started as an experiment in holo-deck and particle synthesis technology turned into a tomb for the inhabitants of Vault 117.  The entire vault is still intact, but powerless.  The inhabitants, all ghoulified inhabit what mercenary companies come to call a graveyard.  Field reports say the power generators and the internal lights are salvageable and can be repaired.  The remaining ferals inside Vault 117 have become accustomed to darkness and bright photonic bursts or prolonged lighting painfully hurts their sensitive eyes.

The Glowing Sea's physical dimensions constantly shift with the rolling coastal air currents.  The "Sea" itself extends from the shattered ruins of Westwood, Norwood, and Dedham southwest riding the old I-95, all the way across Providence, Rhode Island and ending somewhere along the coastlines of the former New England states.  The former capital of Providence is a blasted hulk of high radioactivity and abandoned buildings.  The old city is infested with "ferals", with some intelligent and more friendly "ghouls" managing to survive and thrive.  The Mod itself can be found here, on the Fallout 4 Nexus Site: https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/32242 (This mod is no longer available through Fallout Nexus.)

"The Hive"

With what began as an embryonic arc similar to Vault 96, ended when super-mutants broke inside Vault 119 and exposed the insect wing on Level 5 to canisters of FEV.  The bio-chemicals and mutagenic agents turned the undeveloped "eggs" into hungry and very larger-than-life life monstrosities.  Reports from the Brotherhood of Steel, the Minutemen, and (believe it or not) Talon Company claim that the insects function together for the defense of Vault 119 and oddly enough with a very unique hive mind.  Thankfully field reports indicate that the upper four levels are accessible and the former inhabitants had time to seal the rest of the vault (levels 1-2, 7 -12) from the infestation
