There are a couple speech checks in the quest - you can bribe your way out of one, the other you can fail the quest on if your speech skill is really low. You're dealing with Bards and Traders in this one.

There is a Base Game quests which must be completed to progress to fetch a Mammoth Tusk for Ysolda. Note, the Mammoth Tusk Quest is triggered on Change Location. If you do not see the quest in her dialogue options, fast travel to Riverwood then back to Whiterun and talk to her again.

After talking to Ysolda and finishing the Tusk quest, go see see Mikael in the Bannered Mare. He directs you to Ma'dran, a Khajiit trader. Ma'dran's caravan moves along Skyrim's roads so he is a mobile target to find. Talk to Ma'dran, he will ask you to retrieve some Merchandise for him. Do that and return to him.

Ma'dran send you back to Ysolda, complete the quest.

STAGE 10 - I have met the woman Ysolda in Whiterun, a pretty Nord who seeks to make her way as a Merchant.

STAGE 20 - Ysolda dropped the name of the Bard Mikael as her possible love interest. I should talk to him and get a feel for how serious things are between them.

STAGE 40 - It seems that when Ysolda mentioned Mikael as a love interest it was a ruse. Her true love interest must be among the Khajiit wandering Skyrin's roads. Undoubtedly she wanted to keep the fact private, considering how Nords view the Khajiit. But I sense there is something else in play, also. We shall see...

STAGE 50 - I have discovered Ma'dran and Ysolda have some sort of unhealthy relationship between them. To break it I will have to perform a task for Ma'dran and fetch his "Merchandise".

STAGE 60 - I need to return the "merchandise" to Ma'dran.

STAGE 70 - I need to return to Ysolda and resolve lose ends.

STAGE 90 - Ysolda is now my Lover

STAGE 199 - Quest Failed

STAGE 200 - Shut down Quest, Mark Completed
