There are A Lot of conversations with Serana. It should flow pretty naturally, but keep an eye on the Quest Objectives. Those tell you when to talk to her.

Take special care to get all the dialogues with and between Serana and her mother Valerica. There are a few. You'll be bouncing off them back and forth. Again, it should flow pretty naturally but make sure you get them all.

It should be pretty hard to screw this up as long as you are attentive to Serana as you are playing through Dawnguard.

If you have not yet gotten the Dragon Scroll, it is strongly recommended that you do the Dawnguard Quests "Chasing Echoes" and "Beyond Death" first.  

Completing those will start Serana's "Hunger Timer" which will give you a little more interaction with her as you delve into Blackreach to get the Dragon Scroll.
