  2. 2. What dimensions would you like event pictures to have? Current is 450x150 (3:1)

    • The current size is good enough
      23
    • 3:2 (450x300) - double the current height!
      49
    • 3:3 (450x450) - triple the current height - square pictures!
      46

I'm considering making an auxiliary minimod to make event windows larger in order to hold larger (taller) pictures, since the current size makes it often quite challenging to obtain adult-themed pictures from preexistent assets -many times you stumble upon a magnificient picture, only to find that you can't fit it in the avaliable space!

So I want to gauge interest on this, to see if you, both modders and users would like it, and what would be your ideal size. But I also need to take into account what resolution do you use! For example, narrative events with 1:1 pictures might not fit in 1366x768 resolutios.

So, let me know what do you think!

If this can even be changed, You will also need to provide replacements for the 100+ default game event pictures or they will look horrid.  The only other way I can think of to make it work would be if you could create some new kind of event, but I don't think that can be done by modding.

EDIT: I did some digging and the dimensions can be changed.  Yay!  That still leaves the problem of all the default images.  I did not see a way to make a new event type, but hopefully I am just missing it since that would be the easiest and best way to do it.

I'm pretty sure new event types cannot be defined. I'already changed the dimensions to support 450×300 pixels. Right now the vanilla pictures occupy the upper half of the intended area with the lower half showing "parchment" background.

Instead of finding replacements, I was lokking into modifying the vanilla images adding black (or transparent?) bands above and below the actual image, o it appear centered in the event window. Will post screenshots when I'm back to my pc.

Here is a thought for you, inspired by something else I saw AGOT do:  Instead of making all of the event windows taller, move the graphic to the left side, like two pages in a book.  It will take a bit more graphic design to frame it all in, but you could even use it to increase the text area of the narrative events for those people (whistles innocently) who are overly verbose.

With this type of of ahurm....Story Telling, it's good to be 'verbose'.

I'd certainly take more design haha. Maybe a reduced version of the chronicle graphics? But it's a good idea overall. Will think about it.

Ok, so here is a first version of the narrative event based on your suggestion, on a 1366x760 resolution.

post-1063447-0-13028700-1488115341_thumb.png

I guess I could trim out the borders a bit, so that instead of it looking like a book it just shows the two open pages and so cut down its size a bit on lower resolutions.

With this layout, pictures can be practically any sive you like, though the contrast between the lower limit of the picture and the background is a bit stark, but that could be amended with some simple editing of the event pictures.

Another thing which is worth noting is that maybe this format could also be applied to long_character_events, to get rid of the decorative letter and mandatory title (titles in other event types are only optional) and have a bigger font size, now that we get enough space.

What do you think, is this worth uploading?

This is coming along VERY nicely.  Personally, I like the book effect.  It was one of the designs I was playing with and was considering suggesting to you, but you beat me to it.  Also, I couldn't decide what to do with the character portraits.  Your placement works quite nicely.

I have some suggestions:

  1. I would strongly suggest using this to replace the long_character_event rather than changing the narrative event.  As of Reaper's Due, there are only 218 hit on long_character_event in the CK2 event files.
  2. You can increase the font size without doing any harm, but you also need to increase the white space between the text and the graphics.  It would be very frustrating to lose letters or even punctuation because a graphic is overlaying them.
  3. I personally like the decorative letter and title, but I like the letter from the chronicle better, and it is only changing 1 line of code (change "font = decorative" to "font = decorative_color"
  4. Speaking of the decorative letter, it should be lowered to the same position it is in the chronicle event.  That still leaves plenty of space for text, and it would be visually more appealing.
  5. You did have 4 users showing that they were using 1280 by 1024, so for them there would be unplayable parts.  The default chronicle graphic is 1128x812 with border but it can be easily close-cropped to 1092x680, which doesn't lose any of the significant part of the display even on CK2's minimum resolution of 1024x768.  (Gods, the game looks like crap at that resolution.)

Since you already came up with this one, I wont keep toying with what I was doing with it; however, I have a second variant I was playing with, that you might like as well.  If you would like me to, I can finish it up and post it for you and if you like it, then it is yours.

You are right with that. I did the narrative first because I personally would like the vanilla narrative events to have a bigger font - and enough space for it -since the vanilla font is a bit hard on my tired sight at times. But actually, I want this to be very modular so I've split event_window.gui, putting the definitions for the narrative and the long_character event types in their own files, so that the user/end modder (this'll be a modding resource after all) can choose wether to keep both modified, or only one, or only the other. The long_character_event also has the advantage of the title being optional, which is best for some events (e.g. the random events in the Blood Moon ritual in DW don't really look that good with a generic title).

  1. You can increase the font size without doing any harm, but you also need to increase the white space between the text and the graphics.  It would be very frustrating to lose letters or even punctuation because a graphic is overlaying them.

Yeah, right now there is some chance that a line might have it's end covered by one of the portraits, but on average they don't so I am reluctant to reducing the width of the text area only for those extreme cases.

Good suggestion!

Hmm... The problem with that is that the chronicle displays like that because it puts the first entry graphics on top of the chronicle background. Without the actual graphical work of adding that in (and I'm lazy for that TBH) it'd be just blank space above the title and letter, and I'm not conviced about that. Of course, once I upload it you can modify it at leisure!

I ended up cropping some of the graphics so it is more amenable to smaller resolution. This is how the current working version fo the long_character_event looks in 1280x1024:

post-1063447-0-39102300-1488135160_thumb.png

As you can see, I decided to crop out the "book" parts to make it cover a bit less of screen specially for small resolutions like these. What do you think of it?

Please, if you had a different design or art assets, go ahead and finish them! From my viewpoint, the more options the modding community have, the better!

The blasted long_character_event_ wont properly process the decorative letter.  I added it but it just sat there.  /sigh  ah well.  Some things are just hard coded in the engine.

Now, as for your current version, I _really_ like it.  Because i'm a nit-picker, I do have a couple more tweaks to suggest for you:

  1. reverse the character portraits so that the player is on the top.  Should be very easy.
  2. make sure you limit your text window so it doesn't go down quite as far as it does.  That last line of text ran in the flowers, which is bad for anyone with colorblindness problems.

To make your text-box sizing easier, I recommend copy the following text to the front of your desc entry in your localization.  This will let you see how it lines up better against the graphics.  Sort of a fake full justified.  Also, this is how much I could stuff into a standard narrative_event so it gives you a good comparison of what you are gaining.  :)

Since I'm working on this very thing in mine, I just noticed something else that your current one is lacking you should probably work in.  There is no frame around the text.  Some people never pay attention to it, but the _color_ of the frame around the text indicates what kind of event it is.

Thanks for the continued suggestions!

Actually, the portraits are like that because when in an event you use create_character, the new character takes the normal place of root and root takes the normal place of from. So normally, they are ordered as you'd expect ^^

I deliberately moved the frames out of the screen, because otherwise I would want to add mew frames, nd the modder should reference those custom frames in his/her events. So, this is the lazy way around that issue.

If you want to make fitting frames go ahead!

As for the sizw of the text, it's like that for testing purposes only, and that will be tweaked. Inany case, the wirter should use narrative events is s/he is wriring so much!

Last tweaks and I'll make an upload and a new thread for it (I also have a big pack of event pictures our if real sex scenes for the repository too, by the way).

I think you misunderstood what the block of nubmer were for.  It makes it easier to calculate just how much you can fit into the space you ahve provided as well as helps you see how far the text might go.  With every other character a space, you have a much closer representation of full justification instead of a wildly ragged right margin.  When I upload mine, you should see what I mean.  :)

Okay, here is my proposed contribution.  The vertical height is dynamic like the normal evens so it gets longer with 2, 3, or 4 options.  Due to limits in the CK2 executable, you have to watch the length of your title yourself otherwise it will bleed over into the text, but you get three lines of title to use.  The total amount of usable text is just under double the standard amount for a narrative_event.  The option bars are double width, so you can have more text there if you wish.

This snapshot uses a default CK2 450x150 event image image, with a filler image burned into the layout so that it isn't just a large open area.  This can take images of 450x520.

Nice solution! I've posted mine already, but it'd be cool if you attached yours to a post in the same thread  :shy:

I like the idea of the options being expandable under then main window. And the event frame certainly fit with that style way better than with the one I used. What type of event if that? How would you position the ornamental letter in the narrative events?

It is a long_character_event, so I can't use the decorative capital. The left portrait was originally a space for the decorative capital. It could be reworked as a replacement for the narrative_event, and then I would use the space under the right portrait for a smaller portrait for the from character like what happens when a marriage proposal is accepted.

Before I upload this one I have a bit more work to do on it and I want to run through the tutorial and make sure it will still work for that as well.

By the way, didn't you do the interface work for the old Princes of Darkness mod? I loved the red interface but when I downloaded it today the only red left was for the family tree.

It certainly wouldn't hurt to have another modding tool.

I'm not sure I would use it because I think the problem is if you go with a vertical portrait format, you kind of run into a similar issue. Most porn and game images are widescreen to conform to monitor sizes. It looks fine if you're going for a single character, or artwork, like that wolf above, but good luck fitting in two characters having sex. Of course, the default CKII portrait dimensions also have their issues. I've been creating several events for a mod of mine I'm developing and I've found that I have to be a bit creative fitting it all in.

It certainly pays to have Photoshopping experience here, because you sometimes need to do some heavy layering, downsizing, and cropping. I'm going to continue pushing through with the original picture format, as I'm too invested in the current image dimensions, but it would be great to have a SLIGHTLY taller height to push the dimensions closer into a 16:9 format. Right now, they're too wide and not tall enough.

Yeah, you are right about that. The good thing about both my approach (see the thread "Bigger events" to test it in action) as well as noxbestia's is that you kind of can adjust the aspect ration you want, even if the empty lower space looks a bit off (you can work aroud that with a bit of blending the lower part of the image into the background).

BTW, how's your mod coming along?

It was going great, until Monks and Mystics was announced, and then I was like, "Well crap, I can't release it without that DLC." My mod is religion-focused due to the player being Lilithian, which is perfect for Monks and Mystics, so now I'm in wait-and-see mode. Otherwise, it's still going fine.

There are a lot of new portrait capabilities that come with the new patch.  I listed a few of them on the Dark World forum.  You, specifically, may find some of them quite useful.  :)
