Turning a HDT hair wig into racemenu hair

So I just tried to take the Marie Rose HDT hair found here and turn it into one of the hairs that you can equip as hair via racemenu. Basically to be able to change the color through racemenu and to get rid of the wig.

The first thing I noticed is that the hairs in racemenu only consist of one mesh part (NiTriShape) in each nif they refer to. Every additional mesh part seems to need its own nif with a single NiTriShape in it. So I took the nif from Marie Rose (the red one because I love redheads  ) and deleted all the NiTriShapes except for one (Ctrl+Del). Then I resaved it.

I repeated that for each of the other 5 NiTriShapes in the Marie Rose nif and made a new nif for each of them.

Next I took Numenume Hair HDT from the same thread as Marie Rose as a reference and opened both Numenume HDT and Marie Rose HDT in TES5Edit.

And then I just mirrored the structure from Numenume (Head Part instead of Armor, one mesh as the base, the other referred to as extra parts) for Marie Rose and tested it ingame.

...

Well, suffice to say that it didn't work as intended. The hair shows up in Racemenu and all the parts get equipped by my character but only the base NiTriShape is where it is supposed to be (on my char's freaking head), the other NiTriShapes stretch to infinity (or better to the (0,0,0) coordinates of each world space).

So my question is if anyone here knows why this is happening and how to fix it.

I mean it works for Numenume Hair, so obviously I screwed up at some point.

The HDT PE xml isn't the problem btw, I deleted the reference to that file from all 6 nifs and the problem still persisted. So it has to be something else.

edit:

I finally got it to work. Here's the result if anyone is interested.

After taking another look at the nifs I have an idea what might cause this:

Some of the NiTriShapes in the Marie Rose HDT hair don't have a BSDismemberSkinInstance block inside, but NiSkinInstance.

Maybe converting these blocks to BSDismemberSkinInstance would fix it?

Guess I'll try that and report back.

edit:

Converting NiSkinInstance to BSDismemberSkinInstance didn't do anything. :(

Neither did changing the Partition setting in the  BSDismemberSkinInstance branches of all six nifs to SPB_131_Hair.

I'm out of ideas. At least for Marie Rose HDT converting the wig to normal hair looks like extremely hairy business so far.

three pics, two from the TES5Edit settings I used and one with the hair glitching out ingame

Ok, so it seems like I misunderstood what the "Extra Part" flag is used for.

In Numenume Hair and the other hair mods I checked that flag was only used to link to the "hairline" nif for each hair, which appears to be identical with the main hair nif. Very weird but whatever.

Meaning I'm back at square 1 regarding the question how to turn a wig with multiple mesh parts into a hairstyle that you can equip through the racemenu. Without having to somehow merge these parts into a single mesh.

Just using the nif for the wig doesn't work, because then only the first mesh part in that nif shows up on my character ingame.

I turned the Lulu Hair from a wig to Racemenu compatible.

Can't remember exactly though, so just going from the top of my head  :P.

Separate each part and then copy/paste each part that you want to change hair color and rename with 'HL' (HairLine) at the end.

Other parts like accessories don't need the duplicate HL.

Need to make sure each part that has HDT is setup with the Skeleton for the Hair and HairHL (and accessories if any).

Then either make new esp or use an existing one to setup the parts.

Have a 'Main' Hair part and add the extra parts like in the pic (bottom left):

Hope this helps  :D

Ps, from what i can remember this will only work with HDT PE Hair, SMP Hair causes CTD.

Looks pretty much exactly like I tried it... except for the HL part for the base but that should only influence hair color if I understand you correctly.

But there were no "character bumper" entries in my nifs, maybe that's the reason why it stretched to infinity...

Will see tomorrow, after another failed attempt to join the meshes in Blender (can't export because some "faces are not assigned to a body part" or some other nonsense) I'm fed up with this shit for today.  <_<

Thanks anyway, at least now I know that the extra parts idea works. :)

I tried it again and now it suddenly works.

Seems like I forgot to check auto sanitize after deleting NiTriShapes from the nif. I'm dumb.  ^_^

Anyway, if someone wants Marie Rose as racemenu hair here it is:

MarieRoseHDT.7z

credits to Daiemonic, Daie and whoever might have created this hair in the first place (MortredL I guess)

edit:

With this hair there are a few small grey patches on the head, as if she got a bad case of scurf.

These are already there on the wig so this is not a result of the edits I made.

If someone has an idea how to get rid of those I'd like to know too. :)

Oh and I just removed these four fugly X ribbons (or "rubans" as the hair author prefers ^^) using an Outfit Studio zap slider.

If you also don't like them just overwrite the archive I just posted with this here:

You could try and edit the hair (move some verts) or add a scalp to help cover that area, though you may need to go the HL route to get the scalp to match the hair color.

Edit: just DLed and see you did go the HL route, will check in game.

Edit 2: Just checked in game, i'm not getting those 'grey' patches, but do get two-tone hair color (which i like).

Do you have a download for that anywhere? I adore the Lulu hair - being able to color it without it resetting every time I reload would be amazing.
