How DO they do that? Creating NPCs that look like actors

Hello and Many thanks to the people that run this site and for the modders that help create the many awesome mods!!

I've been gradually learning about modding so that maybe one day (in the far distant future - lol) I may be able to contribute my own mod to this excellent web site.  One of the projects I would love to learn about is how do modders create npcs that appear to look like various actors/actresses or even just characters from movies (like the sexy Chris Redfield character that one mod author created and posted here at this site).

Are there programs that allow you to take a photograph of an actor's face and/or body and apply it to a "nif" file?

Or that create texture files from that photograph?

Obviously I'm showing my newbie stripes here but am hoping that someone would give me the ins and outs on how its done.

Specifically for Skyrim (old or newrim).

Thanks to anyone that can help me figure this out.

there are a few cheat apps like that yeah,i know i seen at least one where you give it an array of photos and it attempts to rough 3d it.

but generally the well done ones are just someone spending a lot of time dicking with sliders while looking at photos. i say that loosely, because, to be honest, i cant say i have seen many one that are done well. like that girl from transformers that everyone goes apeshit over, there are like 10 presets of her and none of them look like her.

since racemenu now has a built in mesh editor its actually a lot easier cause you can move verts around with intent. just need time and a good eye.

I found this site a while back and tried to learn how to do the same thing as OP: http://www.relativitybook.com/CoolStuff/facebank.html

These are 3D FaceGen files that look similar to real famous people.  There are other sites like it, not all are free though.

You can export FaceGen to 3DSMax, add hair, eyes etc and convert it to a helmet/mask for Skyrim, which is way more time consuming than it sounds.  There is also the issue of textures.  I think this is what user619 on LL did.  After spending weeks just to port a simple hood from FO:NV to Skyrim the learning curve is way beyond what I have time for.

If you want to do it properly, like Omega99 on Nexus, Me4Fan's Mass Effect Companions then it gets even more complicated and the process also becomes more an art than science.  Neither Omega99 nor Me4Fan is around anymore but Me4Fan did leave a video tutorial of how he did it: http://www.loverslab.com/files/file/121-me4fans-companions/

KillerBee just emerged recently so you can try reaching him/her: http://www.loverslab.com/files/file/3294-scarlett-johansson-follower-hd-head/

The popularity of SFM also leads to increasing availability of SFM models for free use.  I don't know anything about how or if anyone has tried using one for Skyrim.  They are mostly based on game characters but here is one based on real person: http://hantzgruber.tumblr.com/tagged/model

EDIT: I forgot there is also S666 here on LL who has made several Skyrim characters from other games.  He is still active and might be able to help if you can get FG files into 3DSMax.

I'm actually surprised that there have been so many responses to this thread so soon - :)

So darkconsole - do you happen to know of the name of the cheat app that you give it an array of photos and it does the 3ding?

I'm all for cheat apps!  lol

EDIT - That cheat app sounds like the Facegen program that zzz72w3r mentioned later...hmmmm.....??

Every time I used the "showracemenu" command in Oldrim I noticed the mesh editor but have to say it looks incredibly daunting!

Maybe I'll have to give it a try someday though.

Thanks for responding.

Hello ...umm....zzz72w3r (lol)

Thanks for the links - especially to that Facegen site.

Looks promising and kinda fun though not sure about what the "free" demo version of Facegen does.

How much of the demo version will I need for my particular idea - afraid that I would have to shell out the $69 for the Home version.

Still the Facegen part looks rather fun and easy.

However, the 3DSMax program looks a bit more challenging and dare I say you scared me off a bit about the converting the files to Skyrim and the texture handling ... :-/

Am I right in assuming that the 3DSMax program can output to files that Skyrim can understand?

Or is there another program I would have to get to do that?  (lol this is starting to sound rather hopeless!!!)

I just recently download SFM.

To tell you the truth, never heard of the darn thing till last week!!

I downloaded a bunch of tutorials for that and will have to spend some time figuring that out as well.

But still, thanks again for the ideas and the links.

Gave me food for thought.

I want to make a follower that looks like someone famous. But she isn 't on that list.

Taking hours of fiddling seems a huge of time. There needs to be a quicker way.

LOL you made me laugh!  I had the same thought too.

Thanks for responding though.

None of the male actors - and there weren't many (not complaining mind you) - were the ones that I wanted.

Have to say that my different "tastes" are for porn stars like ..........

Pavel Novotny ......

jandvorak_m_pavelnovotny.jpg

I'm melting!!!  :D

Or David Anthony.........

Sigh!!

Where was I?

Anyway was hoping to do a model for actors/characters like the above (including the bodies).

Though this is starting to sound like it being waaaay out of my league.

I didn't get far at all in learning how to use FaceGen with 3DSMax (FaceGen can output .obj) but there is a Skyrim plug-in for 3DSMax 2017 on Nexus and 3DSMax is free for educational use (Autodesk is very amicable in what it deems as educational use).  There are many tutorials of modding with 3DSMax for Skyrim.

well there are 4 actually I would like to make followers of:

One is Maggie Q when she was younger.Maybe about the time she was in   the Mission Impossible movies.

http://media1.santabanta.com/full1/Global%20Celebrities(F)/Maggie%20Q/maggie-q-3v.jpg

One was Salma Hayek back about the time of the Wild Wild West movie.

One was susanna Hoffs of the Bangles:

The 3rd is a food blogger who is on the show unique sweets on the cooking channel.I like the shape of her face and her hair (red haired).

Her name is Alie Ward:

Of course making a character look asian who is part asian and has some western type features would be a challenge.

I just need to devote more time to it, read about players who have done it and posted tutorials and watch their youtube videos and go from there.

OK - still working on this one.

The base image hunk looks like this:

I'm using the free FaceGen software version so of course it outputs the damn FG on the image.

Then I tried using Daz Studio with this result:

Actually not bad despite the darn FG logo.

Now does anyone know how I can export this to Skyrim and if they do, kindly please give me the steps in some kind of english (lol)

Keep in mind I really don't want to spend that much on this project.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

By the way, I did find a "plugin" for Daz Studio that supposedly does the same thing as FaceGen.  Its called HeadShop.

If I do get serious with this, HeadShop is half the price that FaceGen is.

Anyone try out HeadShop before?
