Blush When Aroused

What it is (short):
A mod which enables blushes to appear on the player and/or NPC characters, depending on the situation.

What it is (long):
This mod was inspired entirely by the decidedly unrealistic phenomenon of very conspicuous blushes appearing on the faces of aroused characters. This look was probably promoted by manga and anime of recent decades, but screenshots have proven that it's a good fit for Skyrim characters as well. While it is well known that this does occur in real life, by no means does it generally manifest so conspicuously as it does in anime. Nevertheless, it is an appealing look, as evidenced by the fact that makeup is widely used to simulate or exaggerate the phenomenon, just as lipstick is used for the lips, which also redden with arousal.

This mod will enable blushes to appear on characters. The visibility of the blush can, ideally, be tied to the character's arousal level (as dictated by SexLab Aroused Redux), so that it becomes more conspicuous as arousal increases. Blushes can also be made to appear when the character is intoxicated (alcohol or skooma), embarrassed (nakedness), or particularly aroused by a given act (such as those related to Puppet Master Swallow). There are several blush types to choose from, mostly inspired by the various blushes seen in anime. The hue of the blushes can be tweaked. Lastly, during sex, an additional sex flush effect will appear, strengthening as the climax approaches. The blush visibility of all of these aspects can be fully controlled, and the player's arousal level can be given a gradual boost through the use of a "think about sex" hotkey.

Compatibility:
SexLab Aroused Redux or SexLab Aroused. Strongly recommended. Without it, an internal arousal system will be used, but it only controls the player, and only responds to sex and self-arousal. (Redux is designed to be less resource-intensive.)
Estrus. This applies to Estrus, Estrus Chaurus+, and Estrus Mimics. One can also force Estrus acts to affect the arousal level (positive or negative).
Puppet Master Swallow.

Required:
SexLab.
SexLab Aroused Redux or SexLab Aroused. (Not required but strongly recommended.)
NetImmerse Override 2.9.6+. (This also comes packaged with RaceMenu. You do not need RaceMenu.)
SKSE.
SkyUI.

Issues and related info:

1: Each character needing blushes will need two free face overlay slots. If this mod cannot secure two overlays on a given character, it will not display blushes on that character. Keep in mind that other mods also use overlays. The overlay count can be increased, if needed, with an adjustment to the SKSE\Plugins\nioverride.ini. The default count is 3.

2: The blushes packaged with this initial release have a resolution of 512x512. This is minimal. I have also provided 1k textures for a potentially more satisfying result, and also a set of compressed 512x512 textures for anyone who may be picky about resource usage. (2k is the resolution used during creation.)

3: This mod does not use tints to achieve the visual effect. This means several things:

3a: The blushes are not tints of the face but rather overlays, so they will look different on different face complexions. If the color seems off, it is recommended to make use of the color adjustment sliders. If that doesn't help, download the optional "bright" blush package, install it, and enable it from within the menu, and then see if you can get an acceptable result with those. I have also made a point of allowing users to adjust overall saturation on a per-race basis, but keep in mind that the default settings for this are based on vanilla females. You are free to tweak them.

3b: Being overlays, the blushes will appear on top of any tint-based facial modifications that may exist, be they tint-based complexion tweaks or makeup, tint-based tattoos, tint-based scars, etc. However, in the case of facial modifications that are themselves overlays, it is possible to ensure that the blushes appear underneath those, though this would depend, most likely, on the order in which the mods are installed and set up.

3c: Glow effects, such as from spells, may visibly highlight the outlines of the blushes on the face. There is no getting around this; it is a limitation of Skyrim's effects engine (in how it treats alpha levels). Other mods which use overlays suffer exactly the same problem.

3d: At some unusual camera angles and under certain circumstances, the blush may disappear entirely from a character (until the camera angle or other circumstance reverts). It's a phenomenon limited to NiOverride but probably cannot be fixed. It is not common.

3e: Occasionally, when a blush is first applied / loaded up on a character, it will appear dark gray. This is another quirk of NiOverride. The problem typically goes away, for whatever reason, when the character begins walking.

3f: Color control over the blushes is not ideal. I actually don't know whether this is specifically a bug with NiOverride or an unavoidable (and heretofore generally unnoticed) limitation of Skyrim's rendering engine, but the colors you choose are not what you end up with. In the end, even if you set blue and green to zero, some of both will still be there. The only way to address this problem is to limit the amount of green/blue that's in the texture itself, which then obviously reduces the amount of color control one gets. This is the reason why I have provided an alternative "bright" blush set. Said set will enable brighter blushes, but, thanks to this curious problem, they can never be either pure red or even a little dark. Between the two sets, at any rate, one should be able to reach the color of their choice. If I discover or am alerted to new information on this aspect, I may rework the mod accordingly.

3g: I have noticed that for some NPC faces with certain (vanilla) tint combinations (scars and such), overlays will not appear at all. Definitely a bug.

So why use these overlays instead of tints? Specifically because the push of this mod is to enable visibly smooth transitions from one fade state to the next, which means many visibility updates over a span of time. When you make an adjustment to a tint, Skyrim effectively remakes your entire face texture on the spot, which is not an instantaneous process - in fact it is almost guaranteed to cause the game to noticably hiccup. That is not good when you potentially need to make constant adjustments. This dealbreaking weakness of tints is the greatest strength of overlays.

4: As far as bugtesting goes, I have done as much as I can within my own specific constraints. I am taking pains not to play through the game in any meaningful capacity until all of my projects are done and all the mods I want to use are finished by their respective authors. This means there's every chance that some unforseen circumstance might cause this mod to do something unexpected.

Other info:
I started this mod almost exactly one year ago, but put it down to focus on another mod, and then got thoroughly burnt out for the rest of last year. Anyway, here it is.

As with my previous modding effort, this mod shall remain exclusive to LoversLab, owing to the fact that its admins and community are the most open and accepting. There will always be some people who don't like some aspect or other of a given mod, and I have seen for myself that the admins here do not knee-jerk ban modding efforts just because a few people get bent out of shape. That kind of censorship is best limited to other modding resources.

I am currently giving Skyrim my much-belated and final playthrough before moving on to Fallout 4 or whatever else comes. Part of the process of "playing" the game is updating and tweaking the mods I had originally made for myself. This is not meant or guaranteed to be a fully bugchecked release. That said, it works well enough for my purposes, so some folks will likely get some use out of it.

Be aware that after this update, I have no plans for further maintenance or updates.

Looks great, but i think you posted on the wrong place. It's related to Sexlab so it should be on  download - Sexlab Framework.

It requires SexLab, yes, but strictly speaking this was an arbitrary (lazy) decision on my part, based on the near certainty that people who want to use this mod are already using SexLab.  But, in fact, the menu allows one to disable blushes responding to SexLab, just in case for example all one wants is a blush that responds to intoxication.

can you put up screenshots of what the different versions look like?

If you mean the different versions of the blushes (default vs. alternate), the mod is set up so that by default the color of the alternate blushes closely matches the default color of the original blushes.  The differences were previously outlined: The alternate blushes have much greater color flexibility (I have seen some preference for pink blushes, oddly enough, but that's an option if one wants), but consequently can never quite approach the same level of red as the originals.  The alternate blushes are not used in place of the originals; they get added to them.

If you mean the different types of blushes, I decided against this primarily because the geometry of characters' faces means they all show up rather differently from character to character.  Much time and effort was put into ensuring that the results would not be excessively skewed across many different facial geometries, but one can only tweak things so much.  But you can see a few examples in the screenshot: Lower-left and middle show one of the "oval" types, lower-right shows one of the "cheek" types, and the last two show the sex flush in action.

I have set the mod up so that one can test the blushes on their character one by one without having to wait for externally-dictated circumstances.  The best thing would be to use that system to figure out which blush, if any, works for you.  I may generate a sample screenshot as requested in the future (or someone can feel free to).

There is a small "issue" with the MCM translation file.

blush when aroused_ENGLISH.txt is only loaded when game is set to English.

If you're using a different language you have to rename the txt file to "blush when aroused_YOURLANGUAGE.txt".

Thank you.  This should now be fixed.

Thanks for sharing this mod. :) I've also been waiting for a functioning blush mod.

Could you perhaps add an option to disable or hide the message that usually pops up when you enter a new cell? Or maybe this is just happening on my Skyrim? It says BWAS---hit (or something..)"
