How to make my install playable

Hi,

I decided to create a new skyrim installation using TPC, ENB and a load of mods but now when i load the game the load times take ages and i slow down to a crawl in a combat with more then just me and the enemy with occasional lag spikes when walking through the wilderness. 

My current rig is this:

Intel phenom II x4 3.41 ghz

Gigabyte Geforce GTX 780 ti Ghz ed.

8 gb ram

7200rpm 750 gb hdd

 

My TPC has all the texture packs in it, all at the highest resolution

Obviously i would rather not remove anything, but do i have any choice? Could i fix it with a 5ghz 8 core and remove the bottleneck on my system? Since my gpu seems to hold its own im hopeful that upping my cpu might be all it takes. Is there any new coding overhauls for Skyrim i'm unaware of? Is there any mistakes i have made in my various .ini's or my mods / load order?

Your videomemory size is 3gb not 9 gb in ENBLOCAL INI

 

You have alot of scripted mods which slow your game down.

 

Are you using 1.7.1 SKSE and put the needed lines in the skse ini?

 

your sure you have absolute right loadorder?

 

Also use SKYRIM 2K HD textures instead of bethesda ones they are far better looking and way more efficient then bethesda HD textures.

 

With 3gb vram its not realy good to use 4k textures(it's posible but not to many) you need more vram for that to run skyrim with good fps.

Which would you say are the most resource intensive of them?

What lines would they be? i couldent see anything about changed to the ini on the skse site

Thats what the ENB is there for, it allows the GPU to make use of normal ram for VRAM iirc

I'm guessing that your using a bunch of high rez texture replacers that don't have an esp as well, Skyrim HD is an example of that. I don't use ENB's myself as I never found one I liked. Climates of Tamriel does a nice enough job on lighting for me. I have the same GPU as you and while I'm not using any 4k textures I do use allot of 2k ones and I still typical run at 2.7gigs of video mem usage. Some times Skyrim can be a little slow about freeing up video memory and I can occasionally see my usage shoot up to 2.9gigs and then shortly after that my game CTD.

 

So I'd dump all your 4k textures for 2k ones and even then if your Using Skyrim HD consider using some of the light versions. I'm thinking about changing Skyrim HD landscapes to the lite version in hopes of gaining a bit more stability.

setting in skse.ini to help stabilize my saves. Unfortunately I haven't used it long enough to say if its a good idea or not yet. 
 
As for using your computer ram for vram I don't know much about that except that their would defiantly be some sort of performance hit if you did do that. For one thing you going from DDR5 memory to DDR3 and also you need to add in the slower memory speeds and the performance hit of going off board.

SMC was initially made as an extended GUI wrapper for a batch-file from the no longer supported Texture Pack Combiner (TPC) by Cestral, but uses its own updated batch-files now for compatibility with newer mods. SMC improves upon where Cestral left off, and its use has been recommend by him.

When you run SMC, it will hand-pick textures from all available texture packs and merge them into a new customized texture collection, where each and every texture has been tested, compared and selected with careful consideration. So what you'll end up with is a stunningly beautiful Skyrim where the majority of the game's textures have been replaced.

 

Basically it picks the best textures from about 340 texture packs, it goes for the best quality without having comically over sized and pointless textures, like 16k res on a rock you see once in the whole game.

 

Why I've explained what it does is i have no idea or control over what textures are used. I might have, 30 or so of the textures from Skyrim HD, out of the thousands it contains, same goes for skyrim 2k, or 4k, or whichever texture pack I am recommended to use. To replace them would require binning off my current skyrim installation, which obviously Isn't an option. the fact that i can run through the wilderness without any frame rate issues the vast majority of the time would lead me to believe that my textures are not the issue. What I believe is the issue is one of my combat mods. On my way from riverwood to whiterun, i encountered and killed a wolf and a spider without any issues, but when i got close enough to the giant fight with the companions the game slowed to a crawl, with nasty lag spikes and maybe 1 second gaps in which to fight inbetween. again, i dont believe this is an issue with textures, this would result in lag constantly, not just in combat. My first guess would be a combat overhaul mod, but it may be something else, like daymol scripts running rampant due to an unknown incompatibility. This particular fight is infamous for pointing out any mod issues, as many are found when this fight is loaded, what i need to do is find out what is causing it, unless anyone has any clues as to what the problem is. It could be my amount of scripts, it could be an ini issue, it could be the GPU bottle neck, it could be an incompatibility.

Thats what the ENB is there for, it allows the GPU to make use of normal ram for VRAM iirc 

 

In your data folder you have a skse map with skse.ini file.

 

These lines you must enter so the sheson memory patch works.

enb can use the normal RAM, but you have to realise that ram is ddr3 while vram uses ddr5 your ram is a huge amount slower than your vram it prevents crashes if the vram is full, but thats it the performance drop is huge once you fill your vram.

Seriously take a look into the guide and deinstall the SDO mods if you still encounter performance drops.

I dont get infinite loading screens, they just take upwards of a minuite.

Hmmm, I forgot about SDO, if its working then i'm not noticing any difference, i probably need to have uGrids increased for it to take effect, and theres no chance of that happening, lost a 500+ hour save to uGrid destabilisation.

I've gone from using the basic ENB install without a preset under my own settings to the Somber 3 ENB on the maximum settings. As for the ENB, ehhh, theres some things I like compared to my one and some i don't, but I'll stick with it for now, I still have my old ENB files if I wanna go back. After dropping that stupid depth of field (any enb looks much better without it) it became a hefty fps increase, i can now run in more or less a straight line at around 40 fps which is more then enough, however as soon as i turn the camera or move near a new uGrid i get a lag spike. Is there a mod or setting that will fix this? I would imagine i will need to upgrade my CPU or get an SSD but i don't really want to have to fork out a few hundred quid if i don't have to :(

If it comes to it i could either upgrade my 3.41 ghz x4 with stock cooler to a 5 ghz x8 with aftermarket cooler or upgrade my 750gb 7200rpm HDD to a 1TB SSD. both would cost about the same. Would i be right in thinking that the CPU is the way to go, seeing as it would (i belive) give the better performance boost and will help other games such as Total war more then the SSD would?

Hmm, after some further research the 840 evo SSD is no good, apparently the 840 pro is the way to go which costs twice as much, CPU it is then.

Do you have shensons memory patch installed now? (created that skse.ini file as described) that would help a lot since it alocates bigger memory blocks.

Besides the standart enb boost and shensons memory patch there is no mod that makes your game faster without decreasing the quality of your graphics.

 

How many Ugrids do you load? if you have a really high number do you really need that since it costs a lot of rescources?

 

Do you still hat the LOD mods installed? since you said you did not see a diffrence I explain what it does easy to understand. Standart Skyrim loads after the Ugrids you have basically nothing. You still see big structers like towns etc. but nothing else. LOD mods change your far distand details to something that should be more "pretty", well it adds besides big structures also little structures like Trees or stones that you would not see normaly. Distants view will still look shitty in my opinion so LOD mods are pretty much useless and cost resources so you might consider taking them out, but thats your choice also thats why I like depth of field in enb becaus in most situations the shitty looking background is blurry and looks better.

I had it installed before, but i didden't have the skse.ini, i added that file with the code you recommended and i did see an improvement.

I seem to remember there being a mod that had your GPU pre render frames slightly early, i may be imagining things as i cant currently find it any more but it looked quite promising, will have a proper look later, am currently at college.

Default uGrid settings, its too easy to destroy a save with them.

 

No, i removed them, again an improvement in FPS improvement. I cant stand depth of field. With the settings that Sombre 3 ENB came with (which seems to be the most popular ENB right now), 90% of the screen was completely out of focus at any given time, the difference that it made in taking the above screenshot is absolutely massive. With DOF on the tree's and the mountain range where completely out of focus. The slight haze around them, given by the ambient occlusion i think is more then enough.

Yeah no daubt about about the thing with depth of field its a matter of taste if I stand on a mountain and look down all this crappy textures bother me more then depth of field^^

U grids default is good I would say anything to 7 is ok and actually messing up saves is past there is a mod that is quite save and as long as you don't change your Ugrids on an ongoing save there is nothing that could go wrong, but well don't want you to loose your saves if they matter a lot to you.

 

 

What this skse.ini does it just give skyrim bigger memory blocks by default skyrim uses 256mb memory blocks so if more memory is required to hd packs etc. it causes stuttering or even ILS so with this skse file skyrim gets bigger memory blocks reserved for the load by default the new blocks are 512 mb big so skyrim can use more memory at once you can even make them bigger if you don't neeb vram for any other application then skyrim, but usually its not needed to be even bigger. an optional thing you can do is take a look into this http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50471/? it will create a log in which you see how big the vram blocks get but this is really optional here is a example how my log looks like

That's why i wont ease up on my textures :D

 

If i can get my Skyrim running well enough to handle the higher uGrids, probably if/when i get a new CPU and an SSD then i may take another shot at it, since there the best way to get better distance visuals. nothing sucks more then running along the road between riverwood and the 3 guardian stones with your side of the river being beautiful and entirely 4k+ textures wheras the other side looks like vanilla skyrim...

 

After creating the SKSE ini i did notice an improvement. I installed the memory logger last night, my file looks much the same as yours but it ends at 322  162. i didn't go anywhere high usage, i just ran from outside Whiterun into Whiterun and then into Dragonsreach. 

 

On step-project it says compression helps reduce stuttering, which is currently my problem when turning the camera and that waitbusyrenderer reduces performance, would turning the changes you suggested help in my case?

Ok, this is somewhat strange but i'll try to explain.

I tried increasing my reservedmemorysizemb from 512 to 768 to bring it in line with the recommended amount for 3gb of vram. there may have been an improvement but it would be very slight. i messed around in game with my ENB settings after this and ending up breaking it. everything was blindingly bright. If you enable original post processing on somber 3 this happens, but i had it even when it was disabled. I couldn't get it back in game, so i restarted the game, it was still there, then i replaced the ENB series file, diddent help, then i removed all traces of ENB from my system then reinstalled it. at this point i noticed that MSI was tracking my GPU core usage and vram usage, why did i never bother to scroll down O.o? I decided to enable the logging in order to post the results on here. i started skyrim up again but it crashed on loading. i tried 2 mroe tiems and it happened each time, so i changed the reserved memory since back to 512 and tried another 3 times, still crashed. then i had the crazy idea to turn off the GPU logging, i never thought that this would stop skyrim from loading, but it was, and it loaded up no problem. what was even wierder was that the game is now playable! i sprinted to the house that the space core crashes into and fought some wolves with a guard and then threw the space core around a bit only had one minor lag spike over about 5 mins and no stutter when turning around which is a massive improvement considering this install is precisely the same as before i modified the reservedmemorysize in the ENB.

 

Obviously I'm expecting to go somewhere higher usage and immediately get the problems back. What i have noticed is that my GPU usage was all over the place, between 0% and 100%. the core clock is flatlined at 1215 mhz and the memory clock at 3499 mhz except for the times when i stayed still with a slightly longer one for the lag spike and the vram usage wobbles around 2950-3072. The temperature leveled at about 62 celcius with fan speed at 100%. Should i be concerned about any of this?

If you don't go in the memory logs over the 512 you don't have to increase it and it will not impact performance if you put it higher so no reason to do that only if you hit the block limit.

I'm not quite sure about your hardware stuff since I never looked up mine while playing. Fan speed 100% is something well not bad, but I don't understand why its on 100% when you are at 62 celcius the temperature is not really high for playing a game that pretty much uses your hardware like using a benchmark^^

Well vram usage wobbles of course you have 3gb vram? so your vram seems to be full maybe thats why you have stutters, but that goes over my knowledge with enb skyrim will use your ram, but your ram is slower than the vram so it might cause your performance loss but that is just guessing from my side.

 

Btw usually stuff like msi afterburner etc. is not working with shaders so your msi gpu logging might cause the same issues its a common issue with evga msi tools or riva tuner and such stuff.

I will see how far i can push the memory logs shortly.

My fan speed is 100% because i set it to hit 100% speed at about 50 celcius, no point in letting it get hot if i don't need to, and even so, this 30cm long monster has 3 fans, so its not gonna overheat any time soon XD.

If money wasn't a problem (when isnt it -_-') i would upgrade to the just released 980 ti version which only has a slight clock increase but has 4 GB of ram, or maybe even get a second one of mine and SLI it, or two of the 980 and sli it. Who wouldn't love a 2.2ghz core 8gb vram GPU? Then you could up to to 4 way sli... "drool"

 

Yeah, that had to go before i could get back in game, but logging cant tell me anything that alt-tabbing cant.

It's $550 or £337.68, its $50/£30 cheaper then my gtx 780 ti and beats it on performance. Heartbreaking ;(

Here is the toms hardware comparison on it and the other current top of the line GPU's, its pretty one sided in favor of the gigabyte gtx 980 ti oc windforce:

At 1920 x 1080 its about 35% faster then your card apparently, 6% faster then mine but that extra gb of vram makes all the difference.

Obviously i would rather not remove anything, but do i have any choice? Could i fix it with a 5ghz 8 core and remove the bottleneck on my system? Since my gpu seems to hold its own im hopeful that upping my cpu might be all it takes. Is there any new coding overhauls for Skyrim i'm unaware of? Is there any mistakes i have made in my various .ini's or my mods / load order?

Are you using 1.7.1 SKSE and put the needed lines in the skse ini?

 

your sure you have absolute right loadorder?

 

Also use SKYRIM 2K HD textures instead of bethesda ones they are far better looking and way more efficient then bethesda HD textures.

 

With 3gb vram its not realy good to use 4k textures(it's posible but not to many) you need more vram for that to run skyrim with good fps.

Thats what the ENB is there for, it allows the GPU to make use of normal ram for VRAM iirc 

 

that's describing shared vid ram, in addition to that, the computer also neds even more ram thru another equation that states anything in the game loaded into video also has to load into memory

enb can use the normal RAM, but you have to realise that ram is ddr3 while vram uses ddr5 your ram is a huge amount slower than your vram it prevents crashes if the vram is full, but thats it the performance drop is huge once you fill your vram.

 

Please do yourself a favor and take a look into this guide:

ILS = Infinite loading screen happens if you run out of memory thats it or you have too many script heavy mods which dont have enough time to compile

You use distant details overhaul mods (SDO) no wonder your performance breaks in. The details far away are not rendered for a reason.

Seriously take a look into the guide and deinstall the SDO mods if you still encounter performance drops.

If you use Unique grasses and still having performance issues after doing the steps I said reduce the gras densitiy.

Yeah no daubt about about the thing with depth of field its a matter of taste if I stand on a mountain and look down all this crappy textures bother me more then depth of field^^

U grids default is good I would say anything to 7 is ok and actually messing up saves is past there is a mod that is quite save and as long as you don't change your Ugrids on an ongoing save there is nothing that could go wrong, but well don't want you to loose your saves if they matter a lot to you.

 

 

What this skse.ini does it just give skyrim bigger memory blocks by default skyrim uses 256mb memory blocks so if more memory is required to hd packs etc. it causes stuttering or even ILS so with this skse file skyrim gets bigger memory blocks reserved for the load by default the new blocks are 512 mb big so skyrim can use more memory at once you can even make them bigger if you don't neeb vram for any other application then skyrim, but usually its not needed to be even bigger. an optional thing you can do is take a look into this http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50471/? it will create a log in which you see how big the vram blocks get but this is really optional here is a example how my log looks like

So as you can see it gets up to 437 without the skse.ini file my skyrim would crash if you have nothing better to do you can take a look into it.

That's why i wont ease up on my textures :D

 

If i can get my Skyrim running well enough to handle the higher uGrids, probably if/when i get a new CPU and an SSD then i may take another shot at it, since there the best way to get better distance visuals. nothing sucks more then running along the road between riverwood and the 3 guardian stones with your side of the river being beautiful and entirely 4k+ textures wheras the other side looks like vanilla skyrim...

 

After creating the SKSE ini i did notice an improvement. I installed the memory logger last night, my file looks much the same as yours but it ends at 322  162. i didn't go anywhere high usage, i just ran from outside Whiterun into Whiterun and then into Dragonsreach. 

 

On step-project it says compression helps reduce stuttering, which is currently my problem when turning the camera and that waitbusyrenderer reduces performance, would turning the changes you suggested help in my case?

 

the best solution sounds like upgrading your video card or adding a second card with an sli config, but possibly more ram would help as well

without actually looking up your card thru nvidia, i see some1 here stating you have 3g of vid ram, if you're stating you have 8 gig of vid ram based on that equation then you're looking at shared vid ram- in order for that to work (without performance issues), you need to have sufficient ram in your system that's not being used by other programs (i can personally vouch from recent experience downgrading from a pc with 16g of ram to 8gig of ram, i had to up the vid ram on the card to compensate) - you either need a card with more built-in vid ram or you need more system ram add Or for best peformance you can add do both (i've personally proven vid ram on the card is more important than the sped of the card itself if you must choose between vid ram and card speed)

In all honesty I really don't understand why your install is causing performance drops as described mate your card is perfectly fine if you have the money, well better hardware is allways good. Just buying a new gard because you have performance issues dunno if it would help you, but thats kinda your decission if the pc is your hobby and you don't need the money elsewhere why not otherwise I wouldn't do it.

 

after looking through the tech sheet I'm disapointed from the 9XX series well they are cheap, but my actuall 770 is better than the 970 so kinda disapointing would only buy one if you really need the vram. Even the 980 is just slightly better than the actual 770.

4096MB Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 WindForce 3X is the card I use and used for comparing.

 

SLI is allways a thing that is in my opinion useless since not all applications use SLI properly, but again if you have to much money you can never have enough power.

 

8gb ram are enough unless you want to do some rendering etc., but well more is allways better everything is a matter of how much you want to invest.

According to toms hardware the 980 is only about 5 or so percent faster then mine, but it has more vram. Obviously the R9 295 X2 is considerably faster then both.
My card gets a score of 8k on the burn in benchmark 1920 x 1080 15 minute Furmark test if that means anything to you.
 
The 8 GB of ram is system ram, not vram, i wish i had that much vram :P. Im not sure exactly how ENB makes use of both sets of ram but im pretty sure its only the enb and not the rest of the game too. 16 gb of ram? I always thought that 4 was enough for casual gaming and 8 was enough for anything more then that? i don't think i ever see more then 60% or so ram usage.
