Acknowledged Problems With SexLab Framework

#########################################################

These are bugs I am aware of that concern the framework mod itself, and are not related to other mods using SexLab, or issues potentially related to issues outside of SexLab entirely.
  • Giant spiders shrink and badly align when they animate.
    • Will investigate when I get a chance, it's a low priority for now.
  • Dragons or other larger creatures are buggy
    • They're dragons; what do you expect? They aren't the easiest things to deal with, don't expect any miracles on this, there is only so much I can compensate for with scripting, it's a low priority for now.

Getting Help

#########################################################

If none of the  FAQ or below troubleshooting procedure fixed your problem, you may very well need additional help in solving your issue. This tech support forum for SexLab is a good place to start.

But before posting a thread, there is a couple things you should check first.

  • If the problem is related to a particular mod using SexLab, check it's download thread first, others may have already reported the issue to the author and the author may have already mentioned how to fix it or announced an upcoming patch to fix your issue.

  • If you have not performed the below troubleshooting procedure and read the FAQ, than do so now.

  • Search the tech support forums for topics already created by other people experiencing the same problem as you. They may have already found a solution, or you can add your voice to that thread and pool your experiences to hopefully figure out a solution together.

Did the above 3 checks and found no existing solution to your problem? Than ask for help, but be descriptive with your problem so people can know where to start so they can better help.

  • ATTACH A DEBUG LOG WITH YOUR POST! I can't stress this enough; SexLab is a scripting heavy mod, providing a papyrus debug log is incredibly helpful for helping other people know the state of your Skyrim install, and knowing the potential problems yourself.
    • If you don't know how to check your debug log, there is instructions on how to do so in the troubleshooting instructions below, which you should read first anyway.

    • The majority of the problems posted about here could be resolved with just a quick glance at your debug log and just a tiny bit of knowledge about the mods you've crammed in your Skyrim install; you can more often than not quickly identify a mod causing you performance/crash related problems, or at the very least identify where in a process something is going wrong.

    • When attaching your log don't trim the debug log to the parts you think are "relevant" unless you know the ins and outs of Skyrim scripting/modding and thus know how to read the debug log properly (in which case you probably don't need help in the first place) then you very likely don't know if you are cutting out the parts that are actually relevant.

    • If your debug log is too large to post unedited, and the log is only from a short play sessions where you replicated the problem and then quit, then trim 80 - 90% of the the error lines that are repeated heavily to remove the bloat while leaving evidence of the error.
  • Be as descriptive of your problem as possible, the circumstances it happens in, how often it occurs.

  • Provide screenshots if necessary to illustrate what the problem is, assuming it is a visual problem.

  • Include a list of all your installed mods and their load order.

SexLab Troubleshooting Instructions
#########################################################

Below is the basic procedure one should follow for diagnosing problems with SexLab, though it applies to many non SexLab mods as well. This is important to know if you are having problems with the mod, and should solve the majority of problems people might encounter.

The order of this troubleshooting procedure is in a logical order of where you should first look to figure out your particular problem, and potentially come up with a solution along the way. As this guide continues, so does the complexity, so it is recommended you start from the top and work your way down.

FIRST THINGS FIRST, CHECK YOUR PAPYRUS DEBUG LOG!

As a script heavy mod, many of SexLab's most common errors are printed out in this log file and SexLab attempts to print out errors to the log in a descriptive manner to explain why it will not start an animation.

The debug log is disabled by default, in order to enable it, open your Skyrim.ini file, located in /My Documents/My Games/Skyrim/ (MOD ORGANIZER USERS: When using MO, you should use the built in INI Editor option instead of manually editing this file directly.)

Add/edit the following to this file:

[Papyrus]
fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=500.0
bEnableLogging=1
bEnableTrace=1
bLoadDebugInformation=1

If the any of the above lines do not exist, add it. If it already exists, modify the matching line to reflect the above settings. All of the settings should be under the [Papyrus] header, and below no other.

Save your changes to Skyrim.ini and load your your game, quickly attempt to replicate the issue you have with SexLab, and quit the game.

Your debug log files will now be located in the folder My Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Logs/Script/, the file Papyrus.0.log will always contain the log for the LAST time you opened Skyrim.

If this log file is massive from just a short play session, as in greater than 5 Megabytes, than you have a serious problem with your Skyrim install that you should be looking to fix before anything else, look at any overly repeated lines for hints of what mod could be causing the line to repeat over and over again.

For sexlab issues, do a find/search for the words "ssl" or "SexLab" to find errors related to it.

Looking over this log file for SexLab related issues, or issues related to your Skyrim's install in general, should in most cases lead you in the right direction for fixing your issue.

MAKE SURE YOU MEET THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR SEXLAB TO WORK.

When in doubt just install the highest available version of all of these.

Required:

Strongly Suggested - Bordering on Required:

You checked your debug log, meet the minimum requirements, and still are clueless of where to start figuring it out? Lets move on to suggestions then.

  1. Run LOOT to ensure correctness of your load order, paying attention to any potentially major error messages listed in the results report afterward.
  2. Ensure you are using and properly installed the version 1.7.2 or newer of SKSE
    • If you used an installer instead of an archive to install SKSE, you haven't installed it properly.
  3. Ensure you are using and properly installed the newest version of FNIS
  4. Run GenerateFNISforUsers and ensure you have any applicable patches checked.
    • If you have even a modestly modified install of Skyrim; chances are you at least have a custom animation skeleton, which requires you check enable "SKELETON Arm Fix" patch
    • Do not ignore messages you see in the FNIS output window
  5. Click the big yellow button that says "Update FNIS Behavior" and wait for abit to let it finish, it may appear frozen for a short while during this process.
    • Ensure you see the lines "Reading SexLab ..." and "Reading SexLabCreature ..." after it finishes
    • Ensure FNIS didn't output any important errors in the box after finishing as well. A major error that people seem to often ignore is having PCEA patch checked when they don't have it installed - this prevent FNIS from properly completing.
  6. Now load Skyrim after ensuring FNIS is being run properly and try triggering an animation again.

Still not working?
Try triggering an animation from a different SexLab mod than you've been trying previously. SexLab MatchMaker makes an easy and simple way to test if animations are working and will always be compatible with whatever the latest version of SexLab is.

Still not working?

Try starting a new game rather than using existing save and see if the problem continues there.

Still not working?

  1. Open up Skyrim and goto a safe and empty location.
  2. Load the SexLab mod configuration menu (which is labeled as simply "SexLab")
  3. Navigate to the "Rebuild & Clean" page
  4. Select the option "Clean System" by clicking the words "Click Here" beside it.
  5. Read the resulting messages before closing the menus to return to the game.
  6. With the menus closed, wait at least 60-90 seconds for it to finish the process, you should see a notification that SexLab has finished the process.
  7. Open up the wait or sleep menu in game and wait in game for at least 2-3 hours.
  8. Save your game
  9. Completely quit out of Skyrim back to desktop.
  10. Reload Skyrim and open your save made in step 8.
  11. Open up the SexLab mod configuration menu again, and check the "Toggle Animations" page, and ensure that there are animations listed there.
  12. Try triggering an animation through a SexLab mod to see if it is now functioning.

Still not working?

  1. Remove all the SexLab Framework files in your Skyrim's data folder or mod manager.
The main important files to remove are as follows:
    • Skyrim/data/meshes/actors/character/behaviors/FNIS_SexLab_Behavior.hkx
    • Skyrim/data/meshes/actors/character/behaviors/FNIS_SexLabCreature_Behavior.hkx
    • .pex files in the folder Skyrim/data/scripts that start with:
      • sslBase
      • sslThread
      • sslVoice
      • sslAnim
      • sslActor
      • sslConfig
      • sslSystem
      • sslCreature
      • sslUtility
      • sslEffect
      • sslSystem
      • SexLabFramework
    • .psc files in the folder Skyrim/data/scripts/Source that start with:
      • sslBase
      • sslThread
      • sslVoice
      • sslAnim
      • sslActor
      • sslConfig
      • sslSystem
      • sslCreature
      • sslUtility
      • sslEffect
      • sslSystem
      • SexLabFramework
    • Skyrim/data/meshes/actors/character/behaviors/FNIS_SexLab_Behavior.hkx
    • Skyrim/data/meshes/actors/character/behaviors/FNIS_SexLabCreature_Behavior.hkx
    • Skyrim/data/meshes/actors/character/animations/SexLab (entire folder)
    • Skyrim/data/meshes/actors/character/animations/SexLabCreature (entire folder)
  2. Using the latest available full version of SexLab (Available Here) copy the archives contents to your mod manager of choice or Skyrim's data folder.
  3. Re install the latest version of your skeleton file of choice.
  4. Run LOOT to optimize your load order, paying attention to any potentially major error messages listed in the results report afterward.
  5. Run FNIS's GenerateFNISforUsers tool, ensure you have the "SKELETON Arm Fix" patch checked, and click the Update FNIS Behavior button.
    • Make sure "Reading SexLab ... " shows up in FNIS's output box, if it doesn't you did not copy SexLab's files to the right place.
  6. Load your save game or start a new game
  7. Wait 60-90 seconds after loading the game to ensure all mods finish starting.
  8. Check if you are now properly able to start and use SexLab animations.

Still not working?
Perform a complete save game script scrubbing, just be sure to READ THESE PROVIDED INSTRUCTIONS TO THE TEE:

  1. Run the tes5edit cleaning on the master files - (video guide here)
  2. Reinstall SKSE 1.7.3 alpha from archive (not installer)
  3. Reinstall SkyUI 5.0
  4. Disable all SexLab mods, SexLab.esm included.
    • There is no point in actually removing all the related files, just disable the esm and esp's related to SexLab.
  5. Run LOOT to ensure correctness of your load order, paying attention to any potentially major error messages listed in the results report afterward.
  6. If you use any mods such as ASIS, Reproccer, Automatic Variants, or use a Bashed Patch - regenerate them all through their proper tools.
  7. Run FNISforUSERS
  8. Start a new game and get through character creation
  9. Once running around in game again make sure nothing is broken and you can save, quit, and load the game reliably. Thus proving any crashes, infinite loading, or other issue you were having is or is not SexLab related.
  10. Download and install Savegame Script Scalpel and follow it's general instructions on how to clean the save file you want to upgrade/use SexLab with.
    1. Open "PDTWrapper.exe"
    2. Click "Select ESS" and navigate to your saves folder and chose your most recent save file
    3. Click "Load Papyrus Section" and let it run. (Can take some time)
    4. Once finished, click the "Analysis" tab and you should be presented with some text showing you how many script instances aren't attached to anything and how many with no class definitions. Take note of what options it gives you.
    5. To clean this, on the right hand side, will be the "Basic Cleaning" option. Click "Remove Unattached Instances" and let it run and do its thing.
    6. Once this is complete click "Remove Instances" under "Instance Operations" and again let it do its thing.
    7. Done!
  11. Load the now cleaned save
    • It will be the one that has been renamed with EDIT_, the original save file is untouched as a backup.
  12. Make sure everything is still working. wait in game for anything script related that might be going on to finish, wait a couple hours in game, save (in a new slot just in case), quit, load the new save again, again make sure all is still working. Quit game again.
  13. Reinstall the latest version of SexLab Framework.
  14. Activate SexLab.esm and nothing else SexLab related. (Devious Devices and ZaZ animation pack included.)
  15. Run LOOT to ensure correctness of your load order, paying attention to any potentially major error messages listed in the results report afterward.
  16. Run FNISforUsers
  17. Start Skyrim and load the cleaned and tested save
  18. Watch for notifications in the top left that SexLab is installing, may take a minute or two.
  19. Check the for the SexLab Mod Configuration menu entry
    • If nothing shows up after waiting awhile, enter "setstage SKI_ConfigManagerInstance 1" into console and wait a minute or two again.
    • If after that still nothing shows up and there is still no SexLab menu entry or the expressions/voices/animations sections are empty, then something is likely wrong with your SkyUI install, make a post being sure to include a debug log.
  20. Save and exit your game once the SexLab menu entry is there and the Toggle animations page of the menu is loading.
    • If the Toggle Animations page is empty, make a post explaining the steps you've done and include a debug log.
  21. Assuming all is working as expected so far, enable other SexLab mods one at time, double checking that you're using the latest version of each and that there are no major reported issues in that mods thread, then confirming they work in game before installing the next one.

Still not working?
Disable and uninstall any other animation heavy mods such as Adult Show XXX, Animated Prostitution, SexiS, and SexAddicts. Rerun FNIS's GenerateFNISforUsers.  Now load Skyrim and try triggering an animation. If it works now go ahead and re-add any removed mods one by one that you can't live without until/if it breaks again. Though mods like Adult Show XXX, Animated Prostitution, SexiS, and SexAddicts are largely unnecessary if you have a working version of SexLab.

Still not working?

If it continues being a problem after removing other animation heavy mods, disable/uninstall as many other nonessential mods you could live without and to make your Skyrim install as basic as possible, then start a new game again.

If the problem is fixed in this new game, re-add any removed mods you want back a couple at a time until SexLab breaks again. If you find the mod that breaks it, cease using that mod or look for potential fixes.

Still not working?

Well shit. I don't know.

Now would be a good place to start looking for help in this forum, which to properly do you should read the "Getting Help" section above.

Updated 08/11

  • Attempted to make the obvious incredibly hinted at solutions even more incredibly obvious and hinted at by making it bold and red! Because jesus christ and/or carl sagan, excuse me while I cry myself to sleep from peoples inability to read instructions!
